How's the partial federal government shutdown affecting you?

Those who are able to seek other employment AND prepare are the really the exceptions. Most ppl have a whole host of life circumstances that prevent them from doing both.
Yes. My disclaimer. In general thinking if one has season work or a place that furloughes it's good to be prepared. Yes I know medical things comes come up. But that's not the norm. The norm is people live beyond their means.

See my disclosure. But it's usually the same people. Some prepare and safe for life's unexpected things. Some don't. The ones that don't will be the same ones next time.
(Dis disclosure there are always exceptions

Thats why my disclaimer. Huge things come up. But all in all it's the same people. The ones not prepared this time won't be next time. ( yes things come up like medical issues to those who would usually prepare) I have been an employer for a long time. I e seen the t all. It's usually the same people and it's very predictable.
You indicate you are an employer. I hope it's OK to ask, how often does your company decide not to pay your employees on time?

I appreciate the good folks who serve their country in federal employment. Many are veterans.
They have every right to expect to be paid on time.
Who says different? That would be awful to say otherwise. They all deserve to be paid. Vetren of not. From what I understand they all will be.

Everyone on furlough must be able to report within 4 hours once the government reopens. Makes it kind of difficult to find other ways to get paid.

I have a family member on furlough right now.

Still can't get over some of the comments here and everywhere on social media. Heartless and cruel commentary is why our society is crumbling.

It costs you NOTHING to be kind.

Many ppl are also under employed, or are single parents, or all whole host of unfortunate circumstances. Your “disclaimer” implies it’s with rare exception that ppl are unprepared. 27 pages of this thread have pointed out otherwise on multiple occasions not just rare exceptions. Not to mention whether ppl are prepared or not is irrelevant & not for you or anyone else to judge. It sucks for an employer to not hold up their end of the deal for whatever reason. I just don’t get the point of you or any other poster adding insult to injury to these folks. What do you get out of that?

I don’t get what ppl get out of acting like that. The only thing I can think is that ppl think it can’t happen to them so judging makes them believe that fantasy more.

I truly do not get the inhumanity of people. If you have a job, and get regular paychecks, you can pretty much plan to pay your rent or mortgage, fill your tank with gas, buy food, pay your insurance premiums, etc. That's not "living beyond your means", that's called "living." It's "living beyond your means" if your regular paycheck does not cover your regular expenses.

So, you get an interruption in that paycheck, or even a THREATENED interruption in that paycheck, all sorts of stress is going to start. And, that's just cruel. Even people who have "prepared" adequately for the people on this thread who like "prepared" are going to start to stress as they see their savings eaten away. It's not a comfortable feeling. If you think it is ok, why don't you all just donate YOUR paycheck to those people, or even just lock it up and don't touch it for awhile. See how that feels as the bills keep rolling in.

The lack of empathy is stunning. It's the number one problem we have as a country. As long as it doesn't affect ME, it's ok. Damn the rest of you.

Worst than that. It’s your fault if this happened to you b/c you should have known better.

A sense of superiority.

Yes, that's how it works.

Should Congress elect to back-pay federal workers after the shutdown is over, those furloughed and those who had work will both get paid as if they all worked. This is what always happens and, believe it or not, there is very little animosity about it on the part of essential workers.

Thank you. I wouldn’t have animosity towards any of my coworkers. I would have serious issues with congressional decision makers.

This should honestly be illegal. It’s so unfair. If they want to not pay someone, congress can hold their own salaries ransom. And I know that probably wouldn’t even affect them, but withholding pay from hardworking people who have absolutely no say is beyond disgusting.

My Congressperson is donating her paycheck to local food banks and other charities. I've heard of a few others doing similarly. Still, that's a choice, and while it's appreciated they would do so, their stakes are definitely not the same.

I have a friend who gets section 8 for a house she rents. With the shutdown her rent for this month wasn't paid. Found it's up to the landlords if they choose to evict or not

They should pay those who had to work time & 1/2 or something. When I was essential personnel & the state govt would close b/c of natural disaster or something, this who had to work were paid extra. Those who were off due to closure still go their regular pay.

The other thing happening is that some of those furloughed have filed for Unemployment Compensation in their respective states, which is transferring a federal problem to the states to "solve." How does that make sense? And, of course, the added strain on food shelves, who are helping to fill the gap for those without paychecks.

Open the damn government. This is absurd.

Another downstream issue. The people who own these buildings may have mortgages to pay, and depend on tenants paying their rent to do so. If I were personally in that situation with my tenant, I could carry them for awhile (and indeed, I did carry a tenant once for OVER a year while she was getting money from her ex-husband). I recognize that not everyone can afford to do that.

Mans inhumanity to man has been an awful hard to figure out thing since Cain and Abel. It might be at its lowest point now than ever in N America. Not so much in other parts of the world. Any way it's always sad to see.
