How's the partial federal government shutdown affecting you?

I think I’d be pretty bitter at those responsible if I was working during the shutdown while others in my office were sent home. Is that how it works? Some get PTO while the essentials are doing everyone’s work for the same pay, assuming at some point backpay is approved. This whole thing is so messed up.

That might be the case for some, but there are also the TSA and Border Control agents, air traffic controllers, etc. that all are expected to show up for work. But yeah, if you mean that means that some people have to WORK and not get paid while others DON'T work and not get paid, it's all pretty messed up! Not sure I'd consider it PTO tho, especially when you don't know when the P might come.

Dd brought something to my attention that I am not sure on. She was called in to her job to fill in and found out that they aren’t getting back the fingerprint checks they are supposed to do. These go theought the FBI.

In this state, all child care providers must be fingerprinted through the FBI. So if a federal site isn’t able to get them back, I would guess that child care centers aren’t getting them either. That would put a involuntary hiring freeze at centers. Which would also stop them from taking new children over the number they can have at their present employee number. That could have a big effect on a lot of people trying to work but needing child care.

I'm in the process of applying to sub in a couple of nearby school districts and got an email that my background check "may" be delayed by the shutdown. I'm not sure what to make of that and since it is just a side hustle, I'm not overly concerned... but I'm sure it puts schools in a tough spot since they're all talking about shortages of available subs. It'll only get worse if it goes on much longer, because right now they're just starting to post full time openings for the next school year.

Mostly ..... certain workers are considered "essential" or "excepted" and are required to work without pay. However, those employees are guaranteed (by law) to be paid even if Congress does not approve to pay for furloughed workers. So to help all employees get paid (and stop the its not fair game) some agencies have staff come in with a week on/week off. Now that congress has passed so that all employees will paid, it doesn't really matter. There are some single parents who are really struggling because they literally can't afford to send their kids to day care and go to work and not get paid. In the end people think it's a free vacation since we will get paid, so stop *****ing, but that doesn't "guaranteed back pay" doesn't pay the present day bills and obligations. It's really a horrible feeling to have absolutely no control over your employment. And we cannot Obtain other employment (part or full time) without consulting with our legal ethics department approval -- and they are furloughed!

The title of this thread is how is the partial government shutdown affecting you?

I am answering the question.

Not everyone is affected in a noticeable way.
I think you’ve mentioned that on numerous occasions. Perhaps it’d be more constructive for you to tell us when or if you are affected. Until then, we can all assume we know your status.

I met a couple in their 60's at my gym on Friday, and their son is a TSA agent. For them, this is all very stressful because he just bought a house and doesn't know how he's going to make his mortgage payments if this continues. That stress was rubbing off on them, too. It's not JUST the person working, but their whole family who feels this. The uncertainty would be emotionally draining.

Truth. I work with a lot of kids whose parents aren't getting paid and it is truly stressing them. We are trying to help where we can.

It's clear that he thrives on controversy. That's why he has started so many different threads.
Apparently he also has a whole lot of free time. How many threads on rhis topic has he started and then endlessly commentex

And apparently has all kinds of time on his hands. How many threads has he started or obsessively posted on about this topic? Not to mention all the other threads he's all over. His company must have a super lenient policy on Internet use for personal gain.

Oops, sorry about the repetitive post. The message remains the same, though.

Yes, the FBI is not doing the routine background checks that schools, day care providers and others submit as part of job screening.

Yes, that's how it works.

Should Congress elect to back-pay federal workers after the shutdown is over, those furloughed and those who had work will both get paid as if they all worked. This is what always happens and, believe it or not, there is very little animosity about it on the part of essential workers.

People are people. They usually don't change that much. There has been shut downs in the past, one now, there will be others in the future. Those who were prepared now will be prepared then. Those who aren't now won't be the next time. Being prepared would mean seeking employment other then federal, saving money.
(Dis discloser there are always exceptions)

I'm sorry you feel that way. There are definitely exceptions to "being prepared". This thread hosts all kinds of scenarios.

Those who are able to seek other employment AND prepare are the really the exceptions. Most ppl have a whole host of life circumstances that prevent them from doing both.

I appreciate the good folks who serve their country in federal employment. Many are veterans.
They have every right to expect to be paid on time.

See my disclosure. But it's usually the same people. Some prepare and safe for life's unexpected things. Some don't. The ones that don't will be the same ones next time.

Thats why my disclaimer. Huge things come up. But all in all it's the same people. The ones not prepared this time won't be next time. ( yes things come up like medical issues to those who would usually prepare) I have been an employer for a long time. I e seen the t all. It's usually the same people and it's very predictable.
