How will be the 2008 gratuity be figured?

I just got to thinking about the absence of the gratuity for the 2008 dining plan. How will the gratuity be figured since you would be on the dining plan? Would it be figured on the price of the meal w/o the dining plan or some other way?

Unless you are a party of 6 or more, I think it will be up to the individual guests to decide how much they wanted to tip. I, personally, would feel obligated to calculate that tip based on the menu prices of the items ordered, not what I paid for the DDP (especially if I went during free dining ). I'm sure what others will do will vary.

I'm guessing you'll be given a receipt that shows the regular cost of your food, and if they're smart, after the total, they'll put tip levels.
15% of the total would be $XX
18% of the total would be $XX

I always like it when restaurants do that on bills. Saves me the math.

I have no idea how others will figure the gratuity--it was just the only other way I could imagine someone might calculate the tip, other than what the price of the meal would have been without the DDP. It didn't make sense to me either, so I'm sorry if I caused any confusion.

What brought it to mind is the number of people who have posted that the elimination of the tip is an 18% increase in the price of the plan. That really isn't true, as most meals add up to more than the cost of the plan (which is why so many buy the plan--for the savings). The price increase could be as much as double that 18%, or even more, if you decide to pay OOP for the appetizer, which was also eliminated.

I think servers will also be in "gratuity shock" when those same folks wind up tipping whatever they budgeted. Parties of 6 or more may be in for real shock when they get billed 18% of the menu price of the food that was ordered.

We better hope not, otherwise servers will start taking that out on other DDP guests.

Under the current plan you already get receipts reflecting the menu prices of what you ordered. You get one for what's covered by DPP, and another for anything else (e.g. alcohol). Under the new plan you'll still get those and will tip 15%, 18% or whatever based on those receipts - which will no longer include the 18% tip as they do now.
