I have an older Sigma lens and I'm wondering if there is a way to find out if it is compatible with a Canon Rebel XT or XTi.

Thanks

My only advice is to call Sigma and ask them. That is what I had to do when I first got my Canon 30D. My old lenses were not compatible.

I believe an adapter kit is available from your local hardware store:

My sons both have a Canon Rebel XT and they have the 55-200 Sigma lens. The lens is not that old, just a couple of years and it is compatible. I am not sure if that helps though.

What is that supposed to mean? Was my question really that ridiculous?

Thanks to everyone who replied with useful information, it was appreciated.

From http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html

I don't know if the list is exhaustive, but it might be. These lenses need to be re-chipped (i.e. they will not work). But call or email Sigma to make sure. They are VERY responsive.

The following Sigma lenses require upgrading for compatibility with newer EOS cameras, according to Sigma:

28-80mm 3.5-5.6 mini zoom macro aspherical
28-80mm 3.5-5.6 mini zoom macro aspherical HF

Contact Sigma, they used to do the re-chips free of charge. Could still be the case...

History; in case you don't know: Sigma doesn't "license" the lens technology from Canon. Hence it's cheaper. They design the lenses by reverse-engineering Canon's technology. They still sell you "100%" compatible EOS lenses (as far as they know). But Canon can make a ever so slight alterations to bodies that could affect 3rd party "EOS" lenses.

So it's in Sigma's best interest to do everything possible to keep their older "EOS" lenses compatible (free rechips) or else drive away potential return customers.

No it wasn't ridiculous at all. Just a little joke. My sigma 80-200 fits but it's the sloppiest fit of my lenses ( the rest are Canons )
