How stupid was I?

We decided to fly to WDW for our Thanksgiving vacation. With Thanksgiving being a busy time for flying, I decided to book our flight early. The tickets (non refundable) have now gone down many times - over $100 per ticket. Tell me it was better to be safe than sorry....or was I just stupid to book so early.

Well, what airline? Call and ask what their policy is on credits if the fare drops?
JetBlue will place the difference in your True Blue account for use within one year, at no charge.
Delta used to credit you; now they consider it a "change", even for the exact same flights, and charge you whatever that fee is, then they apply the remaining balance as a credit.

Which airline did you book with? I am on Jet Blue and when their rates went down, I called them and they credited my account for the difference.

This line "sounds" stupid:

"Wait for a fare war rather than buy tickets at their everyday low price."

So no one should think you are stupid for not knowing and following that.

Furthermore no one has the right to call you stupid unless s/he at the time of the "stupid" action could have told you in exquisite detail what to do instead that would have achieved better results 100.0% of the time.

Sometimes the penalty for changing a ticket is more than the savings.

I don't think the OP wants to 'change' the ticket ~ she would just like the reduced fare :)

USAir also will credit the difference, but you may have to ask to speak to a supervisor to do that. When I called about a lower price the first person I talked with told me they "couldn't do anything about it". I knew that, unless the policy had changed, they could do something. Sure enough, when I talked to a supervisor she said they certainly could ~ I received a credit voucher in the amount of the difference .... not *quite* as good as a credit to my cc, but still quite worth having for a future flight.

I have no experience with Delta on this subject....but, I do remember reading another post where the change fee on Delta was $25 or $50 per ticket.

I know you are not technically changing your flight....but, it is considered a change since you are basically cancelling and rebooking at a cheaper rate.

I would definitely call Delta. If the difference is $100 per ticket and they charge you a $50 fee per ticket....you will still at least have $50 per ticket in credit towards another flight. Better than nothing....

Southwest can be changed online. Just look under travel center. I've done it 3 times for my upcoming trip at no charge.
