How old should baby be before buying an umbrella stroller?

Hello all. :) Our new baby girl is due at the end of May. I have another child, but he's in college now, so I haven't done this baby thing in awhile. :)

I already bought a big jogging stroller (Peg Perego GT3) when I found a phenomenal deal on it a couple of months ago. But, I know that I'll eventually want an smaller umbrella stroller for ease of use, since the Peg is big and pretty heavy.

What age are babies typically old enough for an umbrella stroller? I was thinking probably around the age of 6 months, but I really have no clue. I saw on good deal on a Silver Cross Fizz ($69.99 on Pennywize today). I've heard these particular strollers compared favorably to Maclarens.

Is it too early to even think about buying this yet? Baby is not due until May, and if she can't use it until she's 6 months old, that means it will be almost a year old before I even use it. I don't know if I should grab the deal today, or just wait until she is older and I actually need it.

Opinions?

I think DD was in her umbrella stroller around 9 months, when she actually looked semicomfortable holding her own body in a sitting position for awhile.

Mine were in them very early, I know by 3 months if not sooner. (I know my DS rode in one at the airport at 6 weeks) They cradle them just like a sling so there is no holding your head up issue. It is no different than in one of the baby seats that are like hammocks. I felt better with them in the umbrella stroller than trying to prop them in a firmer stroller.

I only ever used the cheap ones, I refuse to pay as much for a stroller as I paid for my first car.

I had my DS in a Maclaren at 5 months when we last visited WDW. It was great because the Maclaren was very easy to maneuver and so easy to close and carry. I had cheap strollers with my other two kids (who are now 13 and 6) but truly believe the Maclaren was worth the money. I would hold off on the early stroller purchase for now. You don't want to buy an item (you will use A LOT) on a whim because of a sale. The strollers might even go down even more in price. GOod Luck.

That's a really good deal, I'd look into it. I'm not even going to bother with a full-size stroller this time! I'd say 4-5 months would work!

It actually depends upon parents, I had buy umbrella stroller when my kid was of 4 months and that would preferable to me more as I want to go out for evening walk with my kid. I think that is a better option of having it at the time when baby is 4-6 month old.

DS was much more comfortable being carried in a sling than a stroller until he was about a year old. Much more convenient for me as well since you can bring a slinged baby into much more crowded areas.

Most of those "free" kind that BRU offers are from 6+ mo. Other "umbrella" strollers are rated from birth - some of the maclarens, peg's p3, etc. Most manufacturers will state it on the package or on their website.

If the stroller has a recline you can use it when they are itty bitty. I have a Maclaren Quest and it has a full recline and the seat part extends out which is perfect for an infant and I still use it for my daughter who is almost 2 1/2 and VERY tall. It is a dream to push and very well made.

DS was very happy in his Maclaren Triumph starting at 6 months. It was our exclusive stroller by then. It has some recline, which makes it much better for the little ones (and even the bigger ones when they are tired at Disney).

For soon to arrive DD, we have bought a Maclaren Quest, which we can use from birth. (We also have a Twin Triumph, which is good from birth up, for when we want a stroller for both kids).

We are taking our 10month old to Disney in 4 days and I'm bringing my non-umbrella stoller (the big heavy one) just because he won't sit up straight in the other.

This thread is making me feel paranoid :scared1: Is it crazy to drag that thing and pay the extra luggage fare just for extra comfort???:confused3

Not sure why you think you have to pay an extra luggage fee? Generally if you gate check a stroller there is no fee. Just don't check it at the counter.

Back to the OP...if you are talking the cheapie kind then the baby in general needs to be able to self support (in my daughters case, that was probably 9 mos). If you are talking more the lightweight stroller then they can go in earlier as some even have the 5 pt harness.

I don't think it is about age. I waited on the umbrella stroller until dd could sit up and move her head on her own. I don't know why, maybe bc when I was babies that were too little they looked uncomfortable slumpled in an umbrella stroller.
