How old is too old for a stroller?

I felt is was better to bring my own small stroller and gate check it on the airplane. The rental strollers in the parks seem roomier, but we needed our stroller when we were leaving the parks (that's when my ds would either sack out or have the least energy) I was SO happy to have my stroller for walking to the bus stop and although it's kind of a pain to fold up the stroller on the bus, it came in handy when we needed to roll him back from the bus stop to our room!

JMHO, of course!

As an answer to the OP, you know your children best. I don't think 5 years old is too old for a stroller at WDW, however, he might be too big to fit in most store bought models comfortably and probably over the weight limit (many are 35-40 lbs). I would say to definitely bring a comfy stroller for your 2 year old (the disney ones are hard plastic) and rent a single for your 5 year old. My kids will be 4 1/2 and 2 years old on our next trip and I am bringing a single stroller for each, but only because I spent a lot of money last year on a Maclaren stroller to fit my daughter who is on the tall side. If I didn't have that stroller, I'd probably rent for her and bring one for my 2 yr old. The cheaper models seem to only work for smaller kids, she was dragging her feet in most of them even last year, and a my double is too bulky and hard to push for a whole day. The singles worked out great since sometimes we split up.

Don't worry about what other people think or say. Those little legs take two steps to every one of ours and I know that by the end of the day I feel like I can't take one more step. I can't imagine how the little ones feel. Have a great trip!

here is another personal opinion-

I have 3 kids twins who are 9 and a when we go 4 yr old.

I will have 2 strollers. one for the 4 yr old. she will get tired and want to ride AND I want to keep an eye on her! She is one of those kids that like to "scare" her mom. We go shopping and she will go hide under the clothes racks- I have almost cured her of that now! When she does this, she get's put in the cart. She HATES riding in the cart. she gets reminded the rules every seems like 2 minutes!
one of the 9 yr olds will have her own stroller. She HAS to have it. She has medical and stamina issues. She is 40 lbs and 45 inches tall. it looks like i have a 9,6,4 yr old. She just had her 6 surgery last month.

I know that if we only had one stroller for the older one, they (the 9 &4) would fight about who got to ride! They are so much alike in personality that they clash all the time.

YOU do what is best for your kids. My kids will ride in a stroller when they need to, or "sneak" a ride with grandma on her ECV.:sunny:

I would say rent a double at the parks. I heard if you do park hop in same day you can show receipt and not pay again. :)

And if kid is willing I don't think 5 years is too old atleast not for this type of situation. :)

for those of you who have older than 6 year olds ride in a stroller, what type of stroller do you use for them?I have a child older than 6 and she is very grumpy when she gets tired.I am staying onsite and want to do and see as much as possible while there for 3 days. She will mainly use it at the end of the day to come back from MK to our hotel.
Thanks!

if you go to www.joggingstroller.com

this is a good site- it will give you all the dimensions of all the strollers they have (at least the joggers) I don't know (didn't look) to see if they have "regular" strollers)

My older one will be in a jogger. we may have to upgrade to the special needs one later if she needs it. :earseek:

she is only 45 inches tall, so i look at all the dimensions.

the one that she will be getting is by ditto. they look like they have a larger seat and footwell (new design for 2004) so they are not with chin up to knees

If my 4-yo needs a stroller, I'd much rather put him in one (I guess I'd have to rent it) than carry him around or drag him whining and crying the whole way. If he decided halfway through the day he didn't want to use it, we'd just put all of stuff in it and push it that way!

Do what works for your family, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks or says!

JMO, Steph

Now mind you! My daughter is is 8 yearsl old but at the time of our first visit she was was justing turning six. Birthday visit. She commented several time how kids bigger than her where in strollers. She stated "they are not babies or toddlers those are bid kids." They were big kids - and they where huge.

As a matter a fact, I was video taping at the time and every time we see this one kids in a stroller "no joke at least 90lbs" we are laughing! That stroller was begging for mercy and the wheels where almost flat from the weight"

You can hear me in the video tell my daughter don't say things like that because he might have somekind of disability and it is not nice to make "fun" of others. My daughter then asked why this kid wasn't in a wheel chair then. I told her we don't know the circumstances so don't worry about it! Just as I finished that sentence that same this huge kid jumps up and start running around because Mickey just came over.

After as certain weight and age limit it is time to walk!!!!!!!

I think the above scenario was cruel and uncalled for..

It's no one's business but the parents and the child in question..

I honestly do not understand why this thread isn't locked yet...these posts are not helping me plan my trip...they are just too sad...

ITA... Not to mention not everyone with health concerns are confind to a wheelchair, stroller etc. they might need one to get around but are not confined to them.

Im still using my double jogging stroller for theme parks. My dd is 4 and ds is 2 1/2 . My dd will use it off and on throughout the trip without a problem. My son will take a nap in it without a problem and the storage underneath is a godsent. I cant imagine when they get older and I have to lug all that stuff on my shoulder! lol

I dont see anything wrong with it- we are a active family and always doing something outside since we live in south fla but a theme park is a whole other thing. I cant see making the poor thing walk from early am until late in the day.

It's OFFICIAL....we had back in 27 days for a spur of the moment trip....Well dd 7 (just turned) will be riding in our stroller. I asked her if she wanted us to bring the stroller for her or would she prefer to walk.....She rolled her eyes and said....MOM of course I want the stroller....I had to laugh....she wouldn't be caught dead in a stroller at home...but at WDW...she is ready and able and willing to be pushed around....:D :D

Like I said earlier I prefer the stroller for selfish reasons....I like having the storage area underneath...and we don't have to slow down to her pace she can keep up with the older kids....

Do they allow jogging strollers in the parks? There was a thread (a long time ago) about these larger strollers being banned from the parks. It might have been all speculation and rumor though - I'll do a search and see what I can find.

Of course everyone should do what they think is best for their child, but when someone asks a question, as in the title of this thread, then they should be prepared for many different responses!

Talk about sending your kid mixed messages

ITA, but many times people only want you to respond if you agree and/or support what is being asked.

I believe we should all do what is best for our families. No matter what we do someone will see something wrong with it. People will make comments and judgements about what they see.
Most will only comment to their family and friends. As long as you are happy, don't worry about what others think.

and the 'official' response was:

"Jogging Strollers with stationary front wheels are not allowed in the parks because we feel that they are not manueverable in large crowds. On days when we anticipate crowds to be an issue, guests with these strollers will be offered a rental stroller free of charge in place of their stroller. They will then be asked to leave their stroller at the rental depot in storage."
