I'm of the type that if adults can handle a day at WDW without a ride, then my older children (5+) can handle it as well. But we're a very active, healthy family. Having many relatives with health issues because of their excessive weight makes me realize that in my family, we are just not good at carrying around extra weight. We've got heart conditions, arthritis, bursitis, and diabetes to look forward to if we don't stay very physically fit. So, we do a lot of walking, plus 4-5 hours of sports/dance each week. It helps that we live on a very steep hill, so that wherever we go, we have to walk back up the hill at the end, LOL!
I'm also very concerned with the obesity epidemic in this country - especially with young children. It seems like they're not given a choice about how they want to be, as they are not even starting out healthy. I was talking to a school nurse yesterday, and she had just finished up basic physical exams - eyes/ears/height/weight. She was depressed that so many students were in the obese category for their height!
I work at a high school, and so many students have health problems there, caused/magnified by their excess weight. A few students can't even manage the stairs, and have to have classes moved downstairs to accomodate them. Some can't even fit in the seats in the auditorium, without some pain/discomfort.
Of course, riding in a stroller at WDW is not the direct cause of any of these above mentioned issues, but if you stop and think about how physically fit your child is, or isn't, you'd be on the right track to helping him/her be a healthier adult.
