Do people book a burner LL to ride for the very first ride in the mornings at the parks to secure a better LL? Can someone explain this a bit more to me and the best places and rides to do so with? Thanks!!

The goal of a burner LL is to trigger additional tier 1 LLs on the same day. Once you scan through your first LL that satisfies the initial requirement, the tiers are then removed. You want to pick a tier 2 ride that has no wait time first thing in the morning so you can get thru as fast as possible.
Keep in mind that doesn't guarantee anything if LL is sold out for a ride by the time you scan your initial ride it's still going to be sold out. All it's going to do is open up the ability to book additional tier 1 rides

Gotcha. Thanks. Anyone have any advice which park or parks this works best at and which tier 1 rides are you most likely going to have success with while doing so?

Epcot on my last trip. Bought LL the day before and got Figment for right after park open.

Went there and planned to scan at the entrance and walk away but the CM said there was a second tap so I went in, did that, and the CM assigning rows directed me to the chicken exit that led directly to the gift shop.

Was able to score Frozen and Remy for later that night, and also through refreshing shortly before park open got TT for mid morning.

Instead of booking a burner ride, we’ve found it more efficient to pick a good Tier 1 for our first attraction. I can’t see the benefit of selecting something in advance that we don’t want to use, just for the chance to pick something else.

Either way, you can’t make another selection until you tap in for that first one.

What difference does the wait time make since the tiers open when you tap in, not after you wait and ride. You’re better off selecting an attraction that you are actually interested in.

In studios we only wanted Toy Story from tier two so we booked Star tours as our burner. We ended up switching it to frozen that morning because we were right by frozen and could easily tap in without extra walking.
Then we were able to get another tier 1.

Some rides require double taps, so if there’s a line, you’re stuck waiting for that second tap. For example, on Toy Story Mania, the second tap point is right before you get on the ride, so if there’s a line, you’re still waiting, which kind of defeats the purpose of a burner. Get a ride that you know is a walk on, Journey to Imagination would be one.

I'm definitely not a fan of wasting an LL just to throw it away—that's idiotic. Just enjoy the ride. That's the kind of stuff that ruins the slight hack for everyone.

I can see booming something that typically has no wait as a burner but why not just ride it and chose the next LL as you’re boarding/waiting for the show to begin?
At least with Figment, I had actually been to Epcot the night before and ridden it as a walk-on so had no interest in riding it again the next morning.

TSM hasn't used their second tap point in quite a while. I think the CMs wanted it turned off because it was causing a massive hold up, since that is the point where people have to grab their 3D glasses as well.

If you enter the Frozen Sing-a-long LL at 9:05am to watch the 9:30am show you're losing valuable time when other standby waits are lower. Better to burn the LL and then come back later, because unless you're there during a crazy crowded time, there's absolutely no need for an LL at that show.

Toy Story is a pretty popular ride, I can’t imagine burning that one.

Another odd one is Tower of Terror. Last summer we had a group pushing through to get to that 2nd tap point. “Ghost Tapping” they called it. I seemed like a lot of effort to me.

Whether it’s currently in use or not doesn’t matter—it’s there and can be turned on anytime. I’ve tapped into it before, so it’s definitely still possible to activate it, especially if this whole burner FastPass thing takes off.

I agree, my example was about why you’d choose a ride you know would have no wait.

I wonder if CMs and the rides themselves that get used as early morning burners feel sad. :) I anthropomorphize, so I'd feel bad for the ride and the CMs... and likely ride it if it's fun and quick (@wdwfan94 makes a good point above about long experiences that you might not want to actually do).

One last thing: If you're interested in an alternate strategy, additional same-day releases for Lightning Lanes are very reliable and may be more efficient than trying for burners.

The return window for the additional releases usually opens within 30-45 minutes of the drop time which can make planning easier, especially since the grace period has been extended to 2 hours beyond the end of the return period.

Just remember that you've got to be fast, those passes go very quickly.

Ok, so just picking a Tier 1 ride you really want to ride and try to get it as early as possible, would be the best gameplan?

That's what we like to do. In fact, we often consider our 2nd and 3rd selections as the burners.

For example, on a recent visit we had Test Track, Soarin and Spaceship Earth booked in that order. As soon as we tapped in to Test Track, I immediately added Frozen then replaced the 2nd and 3rd passes with Ratatouille and Rock & Roller Coaster.

It turned out that we didn't need Ratatouille due to a short standby wait during its mid-morning lull, so we rolled that one over to Tiana's during a same-day drop window.

That turned out to a pretty good stack of Lightning Lanes to start the day and with minimal effort.
