My dd7 is having a hard time with math. I was thinking of getting her a tutor & found one (a second grade teacher at her school). The only problem is she charges $30 an hour. That is not in my budget. Has anyone hired a tutor for their elementry school child? If so, how much did they charge?

You should contact teacher-IMO
That is WAY too young to have to hire a tutor.

I had a tutor for my boys several years ago during the summer. One needed help with math and one needed help with reading. I hired teaching assistant at the school where I work. She charged $20 an hour which I thought was reasonable.

You mentioned that the tutor you found is a teacher at your DDs school. She probably charges on the higher side because she is a teacher and wants to be compensated enough to make tutoring worth her time.

If you have a college or university near you, perhaps you could post the job on a bulletin board? There are probably many education students who would like to get the experience working with kids and make a little extra money.

Also, a mom in my son's class found away to trade for tutoring. A teacher at our school asked the mom how much her husband would charge to put tile floors in her bathrooms (the husband is a tile installer). The mom asked the teacher is she would trade tutoring services for her DD for the tile installation. It ended up working out perfectly for all of them.

A teacher at my DS's elementary school comes to our house and tutors him in reading... she charges $25/hr, which I feel is quite reasonable. I do however agree with the above post about looking for a college/university student... you will most likely save some $ by doing so.

I am a 1st grade teacher (for 20 years now) with a Bachelor's in Elem. Ed. & a Master's in Reading.

I am not presently tutoring, but I plan to tutor Elem. students over the summer. My fee will be $30.00/hour. Around here, that is very fair. I have one friend who charges $40.00/hour for elementary tutoring.

Back in the late '80s....I was charging $17.00/hour & that was 20 years ago.

I used to teach first grade and I tutored K, 1st, and 2nd graders. I charged $20 a hour, however some of the other teachers would charge more. I think it is a good idea to go with an actual teacher and not a college student because teachers have access to a wide variety of manipulatives, work books, and other teaching materials. I know many of the students I tutored came in the summer to prepare for the upcoming year. That might be a good idea so she will be prepared for next year.

I've been teaching for 18 years, have a MA in Special Ed and I'm certified in Wilson Reading. I charge $40 per hour, but I charge $25 per hour if I tutor one of my own students.

30 an hour is very reasonable- you can't get one here for less than 40-45 an hour.

not sure where you live, but all students around here charge from $25.00 and hour up to a college professor at $65 and hour. I do know this because I had to hire one for sept~Nov of this year. and I CHECKED everywhere!!!!

Thanks everyone. I am going to try finding a college student as it simply just is not in my budget to pay $30 an hour. I feel bad but whatcha gonna do?!

My son is a senior in high school. He is currently tutoring a freshman in Algebra. My sons guidance counselor was the one that suggested he tutor. He's a math wiz. He gets paid $15 and hour and actually does it at school during an open.
Maybe contact your local high school and see if they have any students that tutor.

Wow - certified teachers here get $60 an hour. Heck, piano teachers working out of their homes get $30 per half hour. However, I don't think you need a teacher to teach a 7 year old math. Has your child been evaluated for a learning disability?

My dd doesn't have a learning disability. She's just on the low end of the scale with math. She excels with reading (as that is her interest). I'm just trying to make it easier for her to get into the middle of the scale. I've tried having my dd do math problems when she gets home and she gets frustrated with me and vice versa...

When my son was having math issues in 3rd grade I was referred to another teacher who did tutoring. She charged $20 per hour. It was the best money I ever spent. After the first session DS asked if he could have her for his teacher the next year. He now is getting A's in math in 8th grade. We still call her with prob's even for DD.

Because of all of the funky math things they use these days and the different and changing curriculums you may be best to stick to a teacher. They would be most familiar with exactly what her class is doing and what she will need to be doing.

Google (well, I Bing) "math tutoring". There are a lot of websites that may be able to help.

Also, the recommendation to talk with her teacher is a good one - not for tutoring, just for help.

Can you relate reading to math? Do you like to cook/bake? She can help you read the recipes and maybe calculate how to increase or reduce the ingredients based on number of servings.

would she be more interested if math was made fun? maybe a website like study lsland that has games and such that you play but you use math to actually play the game?

The fact that she does well in reading, but poorly in math, is a red flag (it's not an intelligence issue). The fact that she is struggling so early on in school is a red flag. Does she get any help in the resource room? I would have a conference with her teacher, to see what the school can do also.

Have you tried going to a teacher store and buying some teaching supplies - like manipulatives or math games? It might me able to help and be fun without having to sit and do math problems
