how much does driver's ed cost at your public school?

325 here plus they only offer it through the school once per year ... over the summer while we are at Disney !!!!!!!!!!

We will have to get Drivers Ed somewhere else and it will cost more ...

My teenager told me that she wants to wait at least a year before getting her license ... she says it is a big responsiblity and she wants to be ready.

Back in the day, everyone got to take the actual "book" course as part of Health/PE.

However, the actual behind the wheel training was by lottery only. If you got picked, the scary lady health teacher would come to your house over the summer and yell at you when you attempted to drive.

If you got picked, it was free.

When I took DE in the 80's, it was free. My son took it last summer (same school district) and they charged $50.

I dont know how much it costs but even though our ds went to a private school, even the public school kids had to be on a waiting list. There is a driving school that alot of kids around here go to. Its always full with 3 sessions a year. Its $520 and I just got the one ds one of the last spots for the fall class which is over in 2 weeks. I think its like 12 weeks with 1 1/2 hours of class time and 1 1/2 hours of driving time. The driving time you actually get like 20 minutes of driving since you are in the car with 3 other kids and the instructor. The other time counts as observing etc. This satisfys the NYS stuff for the pre licensing and the actual drivers ed class certificate.

Our district offers "Driver's Ed" which is basically preparation to take the written driving test (which is the "final exam" in the class). If they pass the test, they are given a card which is valid for two years and needs to be presented to DMV in order to get their permit.

I was wondering how long the card was good for after they passed the test. My son just passed his last week but I am not letting him go for his 6 hours. He will be 17 in October and even than we my mke him wait. He is only sophmore right now.

It runs around $15 in his school for the 6 hours behind the wheel.

I think that drivers ed classes just use the school as a base and for classes but they aren't funded by them.
I don't remember what mine was but my parents made me pay for it and I remember paying by the week (I think it was like 35$/wk till I was done paying)

we donèt have drivers ed through schools here but we can go through a privite 1 like ama and it is around $500 to $600
It is expensive

I'm so glad we have Driver's Ed, here.

There is a big push in our area to reduce the number of teen MV related fatalities. For the first time this year if you wanted a student parking spot, besides paying a nominal fee, you AND your parents have to participate in the "Alive at 25" program.

We have graduated licensing. For segment 1 $300 Segment 2 $100 then you have to take a road test about $75-$100 and then pay for your license. I figure around $500 by the time it is all said and done

Here it is a semester course, and only costs $2 for the manual! That includes classroom instruction and behind the wheel training. The kids do have to get their learner's permit in order to do the driving part. If they don't, they receive an F in the course. I just had a student this morning tell me she would have had honor roll if she had gotten her permit-she had all As and Bs and one F in driver's ed!

It was about $350 a couple of summers ago for my son through the high school.

No drivers ed offered at any schools here. 13 years ago it was $350 for a private company for 6 weeks of courses. Now it's "parent-led". The parent gets the book, does the course, and takes the kids to the DMV at 15 to get the permit. DL at 16.

Our school has it for about $300....we did it privately over the summer since it was only a 2 1/2 week course for around $375. Here you can get your permit any time after your 15th birthday and you must have it a minimum of 9 months prior to getting your regular license.

Our school district is also $300 for the class.

In IL you also have to have 50 hours documented "behind the wheel" with a licensed driver in the car. This above and beyond any hours that you put in as part of the school course or in a private driving program.

Yikes, I can't even imagine teaching any of my daughters to drive. One of us would be dead before the car even left the driveway! :rolleyes1

Right now, ours is $50 but the school board just voted on increasing it and they have gotten permission from the state board of ed to go as high as $300. They're not planning on going that high all at once but with new laws changing that require more instruction time, they can't continue to run at such a deficit.

On the other hand, IL has a crazy law that requires all public school student to take drivers ed even if they will never drive in their life (example~~blind students)

If I recall correctly, it's required that every public high school in WV offer Drivers Ed. free of charge.

There are 3 public high schools in our county, each has their own Driver's Ed teacher and car.

I took it through the school my 10th grade year- it was a semester long. He taught two seperate periods and then "drove" 4 more periods a day.
I loved scheduling mine during Algebra 2... :rotfl:
