How much did gas cost when you first started driving?

It couldn't have been that much less considering I only started driving 3 years ago.

It was $.33/gallon in 1969 when I first started driving.

Got my license in '60, about 27 cents or so usually, only full serve, self did not exist. And really full, if you wanted it. Wipe windows, check radiator, battery and oil. Free air at every station, no grocery stores at the station. Cigarettes a quarter a pack. Gas was about 30 cents until Israeli war in '73, by mid '74, it had doubled to about 60 cents and never looked back.

I have absolutely no clue. I was trying to remember a few days ago when one of my kids asked me. I have no memory of it at all.

It was '96, but I'm almost positive it was about 89 cts per gallon. I remember specifically it was under a dollar.

tricia.

Well, I'm always being told if I was around in the 60's, I really shouldn't be able to remember them..but I do.

All my friends would get together, so we could put a couple of gallons of gas in my girlfriend's mom's station wagon (that would be .25 a gallon) and head out to the resevoir and swim.

It was just as gas was hitting a dollar. The old mechanical pumps couldn't handle anything over 99.9 so they would set it at 54.9 and you had to double it.

You had to double it in your head, too - sometimes painful to watch.

I think it was around $.40 a gallon when I first started buying.

I think it was about 30 cents a gallon. I can remeber putting 50 cents worth in, and it was also full service!!

Anywhere between 19 and 29 cents a gallon in 1964.

I can't remember. I want to say it was seventy-something cents or so. It might've been sixty something. That was 18 years ago, and my brain and wallet has forgotten.;)

1966, it was about .30 a gallon. Those were the days!!!

Here is some perspective:
In March 1981, for example, the average price of a gallon of self-serve, regular unleaded gas was $1.42. If that seems a pretty good price, it's only because the figure doesn't take into account the inflation that has occurred in the 19 years since.

Translated into today's dollars, that gallon of gas would cost $2.87, far more than the pump prices we gripe about today

What other stuff costs per Gallon :

Beano anti-gas drops $2,432

It would be worth that much in my house---TRUST ME--I'd pay it

Gas was arouynd 75 cents to a dollar,,, cigs were 75 cent a pack,, cokes were 25 to 35 cents,, and in a 16 oz glass returnable bottle,,,,,,, ya know i really got up set the first time i saw oneof thoes that was inan antique shop with a date around the time i graduates school............

I really don't recall what it was when I first started driving. But I do know that I could get gas in Missouri, where I went to college, for under a $1, or right at it. When I would drive to visit my husband at his school, it was just under $.90 in the St. Louis area. I always made sure I had enough gas to get there and tehn fill up on my way to SIU.

I'm remembering something in the 60's...but I'm not sure....

Whoa, I had forgotten all about that!

I do remember when you had a choice between 'regular' and 'unleaded' gas.
