How much can you fit in a 50# suitcase?

We are flying for the first time in several years. I have been reading about the weight limitations on luggage. We never really worried before about how much a suitcase weighs, but 50# doesn't seem like all that much. I know we can all take 2 bags (4 of us going), but I don't want to lug all those bags all over the airport and resort. Any thoughs/suggestions/experiences?

I always weigh my suitcase so I don't get surprised at the airport. My medium roller bag stuffed full is usually 48 lbs., so I definitely would be careful with a large suitcase depending on what type of things you pack.

My friend took a large roller suitcase and bought a LOT of souvenirs. When we checked our bags for the return flight, she was a 1.5 lbs. over and the airline employee let her remove some things and put them in my suitecase so she could check her bag without paying $25 for it being overweight.

I am learning to be a better packer. I used to pack so much stuff & didn't use a lot of it. I pack one set of clothes for each day except if going in summer months I take a few extras. It gets so hot that I go back and shower again before dinner if it's a tableservice meal. Don't like to be hot & sweaty.
I also like to have extra room for any souvies. For short trips 3 or 4 days I just use my carry-on roller bag & a small duffle (that fits under seat in front of me) thats either empty or only a couple of small items. I put my purse in the duffle before I board so I am only carrying on 1 bag & 1 personal item. For longer trips we just check 1 bag each and have our carry-ons. I have all my toiltries, 1 set of clothes & underwear, pj's, swimsuit, camera & film in my carry-on. My meds are in my purse. If my carry-on is not full I'll add some more, but don't want it to heavy because you have to lift it in the overhead and lug it around with you. If we need to, we will get a box for the return trip to put stuff in mostly dirty clothes and just check it.

After many trips to WDW, by car, plane and train, we try to keep everything to the bare essentials. Lugging or dragging bags from point A to B gets to be a hassle and you can't help one another is you've got the same issues. For a 10 night stay, wife and I have on roller duffle and one small carry-on each. We pack using space bags, condenses volume greatly, and on return, we take all Disney purchases and UPS them home. We need no extra volume or weight. We train to Florida and each of us can easily pull one duffle and carry one bag. Even with careful planning, we do come home with unused items, and we do not do laundry on vacation, and script it out after each trip to avoid these issues again. Packing, to me, is a science, I have a list, certain things that always go and ahve no problems.

When we came back from New York in September - no one said anything at check in and we weren't charged extra but at O'Hare when we picked up our suitcase - it had been tagged with a "warning" HEAVY - and it was - too many fun things to buy in NYC.
