How much are your property taxes?

This year, they're around $4800 for a 1/4 acre, 1800 sq ft. cape. Next year, they're going to over $6000, b/c I recently got reassessed and nailed. Long Island, NY

Don't you love it
Why we stay in New York is a mystery! :scratchin

Right now we pay about $5400 for 1850 sq ft in central NJ. We'll be moving to another central NJ town soon and we'll be paying about $9500 for 2300 sq ft. However, if we didn't move we'd be paying about $17000 a year for private school so this increase seems like a bargain ;) :rotfl: .

Texas has high property taxes, but no state income tax.

I pay $6k a year for a 2,200 sqft home.

ETA: My property tax rate for my subdivision is $2.97 for every $100 of assessed value.

Ours are about $900 a year in Ohio for a 1200 square foot, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath.

$7000 for 1400 sf house on 1/2 an acre

LOL Muffycat!

I live in a cape which I bought in 1997 with all the appropriate COs for the upstairs dormer and bathroom. I recently extended 2 feet in the front of my house with a window, which of course I needed a variance for. Once they came to reassess me, they told me that even though I had the COs for the upstairs, it was never listed as "living space", but "storage space." So my taxes are supposed to go up approx. $1500/yr.

Why do we stay here? All our family's here (live next door to my sister, 2 blocks from my parents, 30 minutes from the inlaws), and our family business is here. When it's all said and done, I like it here - it does have the best of both worlds eg. city, beaches, of course, none of which I take advantage of :teeth: . I'm just so thankful we bought when we did, and bought affordable, or else, they're be no way we could stay!

Our tax rate is 1.8%, so we pay about $8000 a year, based on what we paid for our home. It sucks, but there's no way around it. You either pay more for a house in a low tax area, or a little less for a house in a high tax area - either way you're paying!

I live in Texas and paid $4,723 in taxes for 2005 which included, state, county, city taxes and school taxes. We also pay monthly for water, sewage and garbage pickup. The total was based on an assessed value of $167,000. I don't want to pry into everybody's personal business but I wonder if anyone felt comfortable with posting their assessed value. The only reson I ask is that it is hard to put things in perspective as far as knowing what rates are like in various areas of the country. I mean if someone living in the Northeast is paying roughly the same as I am but their assessed value is like $500k then obviously we in Texas are getting hit pretty hard. The reason I ask is that this is a hugely debated subject in Texas right now. The politicians all sit back and gloat and say we have not raised your taxes in seven years but the reality is the amount we pay has doubled in seven years. They have doubled because assessed values have doubled. When confronted with this fact the politicians merely shrug it off by saying we don't set the value, the local appraisal districts do. These local appraisal districts are appointed positions and virtually untouchable because they are not elected. Local governments and school districts are seeing revenues increase 10% a year (because we have 10% annual appraisal increase limits) because values are going up. Even in areas where the market is not up at all or even down a little they increase everyones appraisal for the additional revenue. As a result a lot of people face tax bills that are as big as or bigger than their monthly mortgage payments with no end in site. It should be mentioned that we have no income tax in Texas and pay 8.25% sales tax.

$4000 a year for a 1600 sqft home in Kane County, IL.

I'm in Burlington Cty NJ, right off of exit 4 on the turnpike. I have an approx. 3000sqft home that is on about 10,000 sqft lot and I pay $9600 in taxes. That is just an obscene amt of money for property taxes.... It's hard to swallow everytime I say it!

OMG!!! I had no idea our property taxes were so high compared to the rest of the nation!!!

We're expecting a bill of about $5,500 - $6,000 for a 2400 sf house on 1/4 acre lot with an assesed value of about $290,000.

We also pay 3% income tax and 6.75% state sales tax. Some areas also have a local tax that brings the sales tax 10%

We're getting rogered, but good!!!

Yikes, I will never complain about my property taxes.

I'll tell you I'm in TX. In my county, sales tax is 6.25%. That is the state minimum, other areas will have higher tax rates because the city/ruling body raises it with special sales tax--to explain what pp stated about 8.25% sales tax.

Since what I pay isn't important (depends on how your property is worth, not necessarily size & state) I'll tell you what our rate is. 6%. We're moving one town over at the end of the year, and their rate is 2.5%.

Also, to put things in perspective in my current town a house that sells for about $1.5 million in the next town over sells for $350K--the exact same house, but on a much bigger lot (5x-6x the size) one town over. The whole 12 minute drive makes such a big difference. Generally, in TX, you get a lot more for your money than East or West Coast and quite a few places in the midwest.

I am a renter but I know this 2 family house is approx $5000 a year. This is in NJ .

Holy cow! You said, 6%, right?????? As in $6.00 per $100.00? Tell me I'm reading that wrong.

It's part of my job to pay attention to the tax rates in my area, and well, I'm just in shock! :scared:

6%. Actually, I'm rounding. It's 5.88%. That includes all our taxes--school (which is what really kills us), MUD (also higher than average--lots of bonds), hospital, blah, blah, blah. It's a big reason why we are moving.
