She wants to know ASAP.
How far in advance do I NEED to tell boss about a doc appt? Theres nothing legal about this, right?

As soon as I knew when my Dr. appointment was, I would tell my boss. I usually would try and make it for the end of the day.

I usually tell my boss when I know about it myself. If it's a routine appointment, I tell her when I schedule it. If it's an immediate, non-planned situation, I tell her that I'll be going to the doctor today or tomorrow or whenever my appointment is scheduled.

I do have to make sure the office has coverage but I supervise them so I arrange their schedules anyway. My employees handle doctor's appointments the same way I do.

I've always had to schedule appts on my own time so no need for the boss to know :rotfl:

What does it state in your company manual?

I tell as soon as I know. Never had a problem with this.

Except one boss who said NO. Then I said "I will DIE"...then he sad 'OK, But you will have to make up the time"...Then I cant type on the disboards what I said next.;)

This is solely dependent on your company manual. My company actually allows 6 Dr Appt visits a year at 2 hour increments that are paid. Simialr to using paid time off but you don't have to take your paid time off. As a Supervisor I ask for 24 hour notice. But we have policies in place to ensure coverage and everyone is estutely aware of how many can be off on a given day barring exceptions.

Usually when I find out I put it on the calendar. I have an awesome boss so I want to make sure that she knows when I have to leave early.

I dont even tell him, just say, Im going to go poop :thumbsup2

I just need enough time for the school secretary to get me a substitute...usually about one day's notice.

Why would you not want to give advance notice for something like this? If it's an urgent situation, that's obviously different, but for a scheduled appointment you should give as much notice as possible.

depends on company policy.

place where i retired from you let sup know asap so they could ensure coverage unless it was urgent.

i had one person who NEVER let me know, and coincidentaly he ALWAYS mangaged to have one when we were schedualed for a disciplinary conference or on a monday or friday (monday 'first thing' or friday 'right after lunch') it was written in our policy that after so many appointments, with advance notice from h/r an employee could be either required to apply for fmla to cover their absences due to med appointments (still could use sick leave) and provide a doctor's note for each appointment. the employee i had was put onto this system and was later terminated for falsifying a timecard (put on 'doctor's appointment' said he forgot to get note, h/r had the fmla release on file and contacted the doctor's office who verified no appointment that day).

Are you using vacation/personal time for it or just asking to leave early/come in late? Either way I try to give as much notice as possible but if I'm just expecting to be cut some slack and not actually have to use any time I'm certainly going to try to accomodate my boss to the best of my ability.

Your company really doesn't have to give you time off to go to the doctor, unless it's for workmen's comp, although most do allow it. I would think that letting them know ASAP is a good rule of thumb.

So do I. I would never schedule an appointment during working hours. We can't come in late or leave early, if you have to have an appointment during working hours you have to take the entire day off!

Our company requires you to schedule way in advance based on how much available time is in the system. The Manager is willing to make exceptions for special cases though, particularly if you grovel a bit. :)

As someone with 36 direct reports, I tell them I need to know ASAP. My techs (I work in a pharmacy) have every other weekend off as well as one day every week, so I expect them to schedule their appointments on their days off. If it's an emergency or they have to work around a doctor's office's weird hours, I need as much notice as possible, as I need to get coverage so that my nursing home residents get their meds in a timely manner. And, they need to have the PTO time available to cover the time off work. No PTO time, no time off work. If I get no notice and someone lets me know that day they they will either be off or working less than 6 hours (per company policy) it's unexcused. Even if they have a note. Dr's notes only excuse you after 5 unexcused absences per year, and 7 is termination.

So, technically they have to give me at least a day's notice to not get an unexcused absence point. But if they make a habit of last-minute notice, they will get counseled and written up.
