Now that the car is paid for, I'm wondering how long we can make it last. We get regular oil changes and do all the scheduled stuff.

I have a 2008 Sonata with 17,000 miles on it. Bought it 2 years ago. It replaced a 1993 Toyota Previa with 180,000.

'04 Mazda MPV minivan has 86K miles

'02 Chrysler Sebring LX has 101K miles

We have no vehicle debt and hope to keep it this way. The Sebring is next to be replaced, probably with either a truck or SUV. used, bought with cash...hopefully...provided the Sebring holds out long enough.

'04 Chrysler Pacifica 160,000+ miles. '04 Mazd 65,000. '01 Toyo Tundra 90,000 & '04 Saturn Ion 88,000. Just made my last pymt on our daughters used car. ('04 Mazd) So we are now, temporarily w/o a car pymt. (as long as I can last with the Pacifica) That $ will now help pay down some other cc debt before getting another car payment! Deb

2004 Honda Odyssey- 105,000 (purchased new)

1997 Saab 900- 151,000 (purchased used 4+ years ago)

We did have some expenses this year totally $2750 for both. That is the highest we've ever spent. Usually it is more like $1,000 for both max. That is the cost of one month's car payments for each. Our Honda is going to need a $600 timing belt this year. I hope that is all we encounter. The savings in road/excise tax and interest, in addition to the cost of the new car payements is huge. We were able to buy a ski cabin for a vacation home since we don't have car payments anymore! We are now saving so we can buy a new/used car outright next time.

2009 Dodge Caliber 4,900
2005 Chrysler Pacifica 128,000
2004 Chrysler Concorde 111,000
1987 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster 87,000 (only driven in summer)

02 Town & Country 110000 miles
06 Kia Spectra 41000 miles

and we just sold a 1994 Ford Ranger with 197000 miles, it was becoming unreliable (broke down on DH) and he can't do many repairs himself, but when I listed it on craigslist we had a buyer within a half hour, they picked it up today :thumbsup2.

2003 GMC Envoy - 110,000 miles
2008 Infiniti M35x - 31,000 miles

We'll probably look at replacing the Envoy in another 12 - 24 months.

2002 Saturn SL-240,000 miles on it-less than $500 of unscheduled repairs in 8 years.

2008 Saturn Vue-41,000-no issues at all.

GM lost a customer when Saturn was eliminated.

'99 Chevy Venture with 126,000
'04 Dodge Dakota with 47,000

Hoping the Venture lasts to close to 200K!

78 pontiac trans am-78K -its a restored show car garaged and drive on sunny summer sundays

92 Dodge caravan-240K-only major repairs have been an ignition replacement at 160K
99 Chevy Tahoe-148K
06 TDI Diesel VW Beetle-68K

We buy our cars new-but make them last-i bought the TA when i was a senior in HS-paid for it myself.

'04 Mazda 6 98,000
'04 Ford F150 75,000

Just spent $1700 on the Mazda: new tires, shocks, struts, and tune up. We havent had new car debt for 2.5 years and are hoping to make it a couple more. I told DH we need to start saving for our next vehicle NOW.

DH and I have newer cars with low mileage, but the best car to drive is teen's 98 Toyota Camry with 120,000+ miles on it. Drives so nice that we are rethinking new cars for ourselves.

Oldest is a 99 Nissan Altima GXE with 102,000 on it.

Any decently made modern car will last a looooooong time if you even take care of it a little. ALL mechanical objects need routine maintenance to keep running, so ALL cars need to have certain things replaced from time to time, but a decently cared for car should give the average person at least 150,000 to 200,000 miles.

Most Americans just get tired of their cars and want a new toy long before the vehicle actually needs to be replaced and/or ignore the fact that a one-time $1,000 outlay for repair is cheaper than a new $300 per month car payment for the next five years...

2006 Toyota Sienna - 47,000 miles
2002 Nissan Maxima - 77,000 miles

We are currently saving to replace the Maxima in the next year or so. The minivan should be good for several more years.

Almost 189,000 miles- VW Jettawagon. Purchased new in 2002. Regular maintenance. No major problems. Knock on wood. Not looking to get another car for a couple of years yet. Before that we had a 1995 Jetta sedan bought used with around 60000 miles on it. Traded it in at almost 190,000 miles on it. No major repairs just regular maintenance needed.

2001 Chevy Malibu 187k, but now it has a crack in the head gasket...we put some stop a leak gunk in it and it's still going strong. Although it's a 3rd car so we only drive it around town and not back and forth to work anymore since the fall. We're hoping to get hubbie a new work car late summer early fall and replace this one. Before the Malibu Dh had a 1990 Olds Cutless Supreme with 197k. We drive them till they die and pay cash for the next one.
