Good lord, where did you live that gas was $4 a gallon? A friend just posted on FB that gas prices in Hawaii hit $3.95 a gallon yesterday, a record high.
I considered taking a job that involved a 90 minute drive each way.....I figured I'd wear out a car every 3 or 4 years, and probably me, so didn't take the job.
My current commute is the longest I've ever had, 13 miles, 15 minutes. Takes me 10 minutes to drive the first 5 miles to get to the freeway, and about 5 minutes to drive the rest at 70 mph on the freeway....no traffic at 2:45 am when I go to work.
Nice!! I would love a commute like yours.
Well if I ever find a new job that is! lol I laugh but I'm really serious.
And don't you remember, a couple years ago gas was over $4 a gallon here. When it was over $4 DBF took the Amtrak to work, it was actually cheaper for him to take the train then to drive, now (even with wear and tear on the car and the lame $5 tolls) it's cheaper for him to drive. If gas prices keep going up tho it's back to the train for him! I believe it is chosen much more than people might like to admit. Living in closer proximity to the job may not always be the best option, but it is an option.
Sure it's an option, if we want the kids to be around gangs and major drug issues.....sorry but that's NOT an option if you're being realistic. DBF works in a place that has very few job choices for me, very bad schools and high crime. We live in a place that offers better job choices for me (when they are available, right now they aren't, too many people around here out of work), very good schools and very low crime. We would both rather he commute daily then subject the kids to a poorer way of life.
