How late is too late?

In our small rural town...the town curfew is 10 pm Anybody under the age of 17..must be in their yard by 10pm. It's kinda silly!

When the boys are here playing...I have to walk the boys two houses down to their yard.or they can get a ticket for curfew! Our house is the favorite because we have a lighted court and a 72 inch backboard! The lights are directly on the Basketball hoop assemby.

Sometimes, they will want Gatorade or something..and i have to walk with them to the local gas station.

So, sometimes, I just let them do whatever they want in our yard. I swear the police park down the street to see if they leave the yard!

BTW..my son (14) is a 5.0 student, and the captain of the basketball team..and the offensive leader three years in a row...so all those late night on the driveway pay off.( or maybe, the thousands we spend yearly at basketball camps, summer travel league, and private 1 on 1 lessons with a former pro). But whatever...he is happy!

 Well, good for you and your perfect son. As long as he's happy.....

What, however, does this have to do with the OP's question?

but if your 6 year old wakes them up early...the TEENAGERS may go to bed earlier that night...lol!

Just an idea ;)

The only problem with that is that our driveway is on the side of our other neighbors. The considerate ones. Honestly, I would rather teach my children to be mindful of their surroundings. Thanks though. ;)

Wow...really!
My son shoots outside past 11:00 quite frequently, especially during the Summer.
Granted..the houses are not that close..but when they are playing a game of 2 on 2..or whatever...they get loud.

I don't care...there are sooo many other things they could be doing!
Get a fan for white noise
!

 Sorry-on a weeknight-noise after 9pm is disturbing the neighborhood.

I think being 6 and riding your bike outside is a normal thing.

I would much rather have kids outside playing than sitting inside playing XBOX or watching TV.

and as a mother of 3 teenagers...they should not be sleeping till NOON..and ironically, trust me..your 6 year old will not keep them awake! Most teenagers cant be woke up be a large tornado or an earthquake :)

I'm confused now...

Of course it's a normal thing to be riding a bike. That's why when my children want to do it early we will all either go for a bike ride or I will take them to the park. I have no idea if the teenagers are sleeping until noon or not, I just prefer my children play quietly if it's early morning and they are in an area where anybody may be sleeping. Just like when we are at Disney, when we go back to the Resort and walk through the hallways we do it quietly as to not disturb people who may be resting. It's having consideration for other people. It's now 11:25 and they are still playing basketball, it seems 3 of the boys have gone home so it is a little quieter. This is getting ridiculous.

I assume this is the first nice weather day in awhile. I know here in Illinois we hit 64 degrees this afternoon.
They are probably just getting some much needed "outside" time!

I know it's frustrating...but in our last neighborhood( granted it was 12 years ago)..but we had a BB hoop mounted on our house. Our teenage neighbors would come over very late and night and play on our driveway and the basketball hoop was mounted right beneath our bedroom windows. I had a 2 year old and a Newborn at the time. I was more than a little peeved...but when they started shooting guns at each other.....i wished they would go back to playing basketball....and Ya..we moved within 3 weeks of that incident!

Hopefully, they will tire and go inside!

Your post made me laugh simply because of where I live. Things aren't exactly winding down at 9pm in my neighborhood. Then again, I live in a high-rise in the city. Our perception of quiet is a little different. :rotfl:

At our last apartment, we lived near a popular blues club. EVERY morning at 2am, we had the bottle dump. Think about it. ALL of the empty glass bottles from the VERY BUSY blues club dumped at one time into the big dumpster in the alley. Even 26 stories up, the sound was loud and clear.

Ah, the life of the city dweller.

9pm on weekdays for most loud noises to be stopped, still talking and stuff.
10 or 11 for almost any noise to be stopped.

weekends are later, loud noises stopped by 10 or 11, all noise by 11pm-1am.

Mikeeee

It's still only about 35 degrees here. It's supposed to warm up tomorrow. They finally stopped about 5 minutes ago.

10PM is pretty much standard, everywhere I've lived.

It is important to remember that our own perspective on what time is "too late" applies only to our making of noise. It is only the ordinance, if any, and the noise-maker's own limit, that determines what is "too late" for the noise-maker.

Yikes, can't they take that game to an elementary school playground or the local park? It can't be that far of a drive. Anything past 10pm or so is really rude IMO.

I'd figure that the folks who live near the parks are more sensitive to noise past 10PM than anyone else, actually, so I wouldn't recommend pushing the problem onto them.

If everyone were considerate we wouldnt even have to have discussions like this.

DS14 thought it was ok to play whenever, I HAD to stop him. We have small children on both sides of us and across the street. I think it is rude to allow him to play after 9pm on weeknights. On weekends we let him shoot a little later. Usually no later the 10-10:30 though unless there is something going and most of the neighbors are already outside, if that is the case they the adults are usually with him. If we lived somewhere where we didn't have neighbors close by then the rules would probably be different. Although he does have school during the week so 9pm is late enough. IF he could see to play baseball then he would probably be out tossing the ball!! Without me reminding him it is too late to play, he would play late. When he plays he has no sense of time. I am not even sure it occurs to him it is dark out! It is my job as a parent to help him learn to make good choices and be aware of those around him. He is much better about it today then he was last year. It really is a matter of respecting others.

You're right. There are other things they could be doing...INSIDE and QUIETLY. Don't forget, your son is off during the summer, but most people still have to get up and work.

no way...not to a park....

:thumbsup2 I know the folks living by the park/school would not like that idea....
around here most parks close at sunset.....

LOL Funny the Elementary school is a half a block away.

Around here, the school grounds are closed at dark. I live behing an elementary school, they lock the gates at dark, open them about a half hour before the kids have to be in school, then lock them during the school day. There are times (when they're working on the grounds) that the gates are locked all the time, so the kids couldn't go to school grounds to play.

But I think outdoor activities need to shut down by 9 on weeknights, 11 weekends. I know I have to get up at 5 to make it into the office by 8:30. When I have to work overtime, I have to get up at 4, so I really wouldn't appreciate someone playing basketball past 10 PM, especially if I could hear the action in my bedroom. (as I could if my neighbors were that inconsiderate. I'm blessed--our next door neighbors are fantastic people, they didn't let the kids do that stuff late, same with our neighbors across the street.)
