How far away is the ocean to where you live?

Okay, I'm going to use this with my DD15 tonight or tomorrow. So that I look smart, what first public beach? I'm thinking of one, but don't want to embarrass myself. Ha.

I'm not sure. I think 4 or 5 hours. I miss the ocean.

I grew up going to the beach in NJ for a month every summer until my parents moved us to MN when I was 13. My grandparents had a house 3 houses from the beach that they sold when they retired and moved to FL.
The house was 100% destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. I always thought I'd love to have bought it back someday.

My husband hates the beach and the ocean though. He said he just put up with beach trips because I like them. I didn't know this until 10 years ago when we were discussing retirement and I mentioned that I'd love to move to Florida. He said no way. I have always dreamed of retiring to Florida but now I need to find a new place to dream of retiring to I guess.

I live 1 hour and 45 minutes from Virginia Beach. I keep saying I'm going to take the kids on day trips during the summer but I never do. Maybe this year because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the beach.

I grew up in Southern California and I went to the beach at Corona Del Mar every warm weather Sunday with my family. It was only 45 minutes from our house. We'd get up early, pack a lunch, go to church and then be on our way. We'd listen to Casey Kasem's Top Forty Countdown during the drive. At sunset we'd pack up, rinse off, stop at Carl's Jr for dinner and head home. It was heaven!

I grew up about 5 min from the beach in Oregon. I know live about 5 min from the beach In Va Beach now. Hoping to live by the gulf coast again. That's my happy place beach.

I live in Richmond so we are almost neighbors. If I do a day trip to Virginia Beach where is the best area to go to? I know parking and access to bathrooms can be tricky.

I LOVE living at the ocean. It is my happy place (well, that and WDW). We love it in all seasons, except the bitterest cold of winter. I think fall might be my favorite time at the beach.

ETA - We have an outside shower. My favorite feature of the house, LOL.

I live in the south shore and can see the ocean from my window. it is a block away. When I was a child and we would go swimming, we liked it when our legs got numb so we couldn't feel the cold. I tell DH that I want to go on vacation to a beach that has warm water.

I'm on the south shore, too. That's what we did as kids as well. And, what DD and her friend did yesterday. We took the dogs for a walk on the beach and DS and I left them looking at rocks/ shells. We turn around and there they are, fully clothed, swimming away! When I asked them about the freezing water, they said it was cold at first but once they were numb it was fine.

We live about 15 minutes from the Atlantic ocean. I love living so close. There is a part of me that wants to live where I can hear the ocean. I can't think of a time when I get better sleep that when I can hear the waves crashing when I fall asleep and when I wake up. However, I have several friends that live nearer to the water and their insurance is so high, difficult to find and has so many exclusions, I think twice. We are in an area that has to be an extra wind and hurricane insurance and it is double my homeowners insurance and we have to get it through the State of NC.

As a matter of fact, I have my windows open right now and I can hear the waves.

I've always spent my summers at the beach, and now I live here full time. Can't imagine not being close to the ocean during the warmer months! The summers I lived in London almost drove me mad!

About an hour but it is a cold beach so we rarely go to enjoy the water. A couple hours to Santa Cruz (traffic dependent, sometimes less, sometimes more) so we try to go there, it feels nicer. lol

Did you see the headline in the Patriot Ledger a week ago about kids daring each other in social media to jump into the water from high levels? That was my town. My 18 year old, who was away at college had mentioned to me the day before (via email) that she was glad to be away at college since she would jump if she had been dared. I made sure to show her the article.

The undertow is really bad and the teens seem to forget that until it is too late.
