How does vandalism and looting accomplish anything???

Article about Mike Brown's high school and how it demonstrates the inequalities in education. So why is it so hard for this community? Well--check this out.

1. 83% are eligible for free or reduce lunch (so the area that feeds into this school is poor)

2. Drop our rates are "well above" state average drop out levels 53% graduation rate compared to state average of 86%. National average is 80%.

3. Suspension rates are "well above" state averages. 60% of the black students had at least 1 in or out of school suspension.

4. Normandy High school is noted for high rates of violence. (Considered most dangerous school in the area--might explain the suspension rate.)

5. State labeled Normandy a failed district due to low standardized test scores.

6. In this state, schools that are low rated receive the least amount of money.

7. Low participation in competitive classes. Over 1000 students, only 4 in calculus. Less than 1%. National average is 16%.

8. 50% of students take ACt with average score of 16.8. State average is 21.6.

9. Only 20% to got to college compared to state average of 37%.

Well you left off the largest part of the current problem with Normandy.

Right now they are bankrupted due to the students draining the district while they bus some of them to different schools due to the fact the school is a failed district.

Holy carp, all last yr was a fight to the death to keep the school open!:badpc:

I don't remember anyone saying violence is Ok (it wouldn't completely surprise me if someone did though). Posters have certainly said people should not be protesting and see no difference between protestors and the looters. There has also been many posts defending the way the police have been handling the situation. I'm not talking about the shooting but the aftermath.

The only issue with the protests is they don't know what happened, but they've decided they do know.

It's not really fair to protest in favor of "justice for Brown", because for all we know, justice may have already been served.

If they want to March for racial harmony, or to ask for a full investigstion, that's fine. But calling for murder charges or death to Wilson, I cannot support - no matter how peacefully they make this message.

Still, that is different from rioting & looting. The protesting may on occasion be counter-productive. But what it isn't is criminal. And that's a big distinction, obviously.

And the poster is probably unaware--most any time any officer shoots any suspect--they go on paid admin leave or maybe a desk job for a short period of time. Shooting someone is a big deal. It switches to non paid if wrongdoing is suspected. The officer that threatened he would shoot a protestor is on unpaid leave at the moment as it was not an appropriate action.

That there is that semantics issue of "riot".

No riot on Salt Lake City that I am aware of.

It could that someone is associating Salt Lake City with a Day of Rage organized by Anonymous. Don't know how seriously this will be taken. They were the group that released the wrong officer's name as the one who shot Mike Brown. The poor guy and his family had to go into hiding.

I don't know if in Missouri it's the same as Alabama but here a child in a failing school gets to pick whatever passing school in the district they wanted to attend. I believe at most they should go to the next closest passing school. Their was a child that was transported from the northern part of Mobile county past dozens of other schools to attend the southern most school in the county. An entire bus was used to transport one child over 30 miles one way, that's just ridiculous.

So this community acts like thugs and justify certain criminal aspects, doesn't respect authority or education.... But cry that they aren't treated fairly???

Sorry, stop being a burden on society, start respecting authority, get an education and things will take care of themselves in your favor..

There has been a big court case on that very issue. It has applied to schools in St. Louis and Kansas City. I need to see an update on that issue since our district neighbors the failing Kansas City School District. Our district took in some of their schools 6 years ago.

Wow..I guess its all so simple and such an easy fix. If only you had spoken up so much sooner. These types of issues could have been solved so long ago. Thank you so much for enlightening us all.

I am not from the area and it wasn't mentioned in the article. That would another mega problem for them.

Early on I'd bet a lot of people thought the protests and riots were the same. I'd still bet that their are more then a few crossovers between the two groups. But I don't think it's the same people organizing both, however if I was in charge of organizing the protests which has (either directly or indirectly) set off looting and rioting, I'd probably stop my organized protests because even if it's indirectly it is causing harm to others.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that I am 100% confident that those Day of rage protests are over a unarmed black teenager/adult being shot by a white officer and not over the unarmed white male shot by a black officer in Salt Lake City. They probably aren't even aware as the media is unlikely covering it.

And--the black officer? He is referred to as "non-white" by local media.
http://www.dailynewsen.com/m/?id=2561535

But I do stand corrected--I did come across an article that someone will be protesting. But about 10 days after he was shot.

It's to protest police in the Mike Brown case. Other cities might do spin offs though.

The thing that is really getting on my nerves about all of the reporting is the focus on " an unarmed man" and why he was not shot in the arm/ leg ect ect . FYI : a UNARMED person can kill you as fast as someone with a weapon. The officer was already hit, if the guy had got close enough he could have taken the gun or one of the other things on the gunbelt and used it against the officer then we would be reading about another LEO killed in the line of duty.
The police do not shoot to " wound" ever... Someone that is wounded can kill you, a women can kill you, a child can kill you and someone with a mental illness can kill you .. Armed or unarmed.
I am sure that when all the evidence comes out there will be some that will not agree and there will always will be some that will be unhappy no matter what.

I think this is another chicken or egg scenario though, with a little you can lead a horse to water but you can't force them to drink thrown in.

Are the students failing because the schools don't care or are the schools failing because the students don't care?

I've always though getting an education was 90% self motivation and 10% teacher inspiration. Until they can convince the students that an eduction is vital to success in life they are fighting a losing battle. I think the belief that the world is against black people is ultimately a big part of the reason so many black people give up and ultimately do fail. They don't believe they have a future so they don't put in the work to better their future.

It's to protest police in the Mike Brown case. Other cities might do spin offs though.

I realiZe I am not being clear.

And the same scenario occurred, but the races are opposite--no riots. No nobting. And even an active media action to play down the race of the officer who shot.

I said no riots on SLC--for that shooting that occurred on Aug 11. You replied with protest for a shooting that occurred in Ferguson on Aug 9. They are not there on behalf of a white boy shot by an officer.

In any case--rioting is not peaceful protest and that is what occurred in Ferguson. But not a peep when an officer shoots an unarmed man in another town. It is clearly only a problem and always racist when a black man is gunned down by an officer and this rioting (as opposed to peaceful protest which also occurred) was warranted.

Now back to the poster I was referring two--if a white son were the one shot and killed, then we would be okay with rioting and expect it. Somehow, SLC didn't get the memo.

Don't disagree, was just weighing in with my POV :)

I get there are many people that just want to protest with causing problems. A few bad apple ruin the whole bunch kind of deal. I just don't see the point of breaking windows of business ( of hard working people) to steal stuff.

As for the shooting...I want to see all the evidenced first before I judge.
