How does the renter protect himself from a bad transaction?

I am hoping to rent points for a stay March 11-18. (I hope I'm not too late). If I find someone willing to rent points, I assume that I will be asked fairly quickly to pay the entire amount up front. Therefore, it seems the one renting points to me is taking no risk, correct? On the other hand, it seems like I am taking a risk that the one renting points could cancel the reservations when I'm on a plane flying to WDW. I'm generally a very trusting person and I know that this relationship is based on trust, but how can I protect myself other than ask for references and hope for the best?

There would be risks to both parties.
Each has to have some trust.
I suggest only renting from someone who has a track record/references.
A contract is never a bad idea between the two parties either.

I've rented 6+ times and never had any problem whatsoever.

Actually, you are quite late, and there may not be much if any availability at any of the DVC resorts at this point.

FYI, at this late date, the owner of the points is taking a rather large risk. If you should need to change or cancel your plans within 30 days of departure, they would stand to lose the use of those points. It is actually a pretty equal risk on both sides, so for that reason, I would assume most people offering points for rent are going to be pretty honest, since they stand to lose too. Still, it is best to get a contract and only rent from people with a lot of posts on the DIS.

You could always make a reservation with CRO and pay rack rate or get some other discount if available. Then you would be under Disney's rules and not an individual's rules.

This might be a stupid question, but how would you get a contract for renting points?

I would suggest there is no way to protect yourself.

Its all about trust.....and this is on both sides I should mention.

The good news is you will be getting a deal of a lifetime and the bad news is anything can happen to your reservation. That is truly the chance you take.

I have been on the boards for some time and very rarely hear of any bad stories.

Good Luck.

there are a few "out there".......i wound up making my own tho (a more detailed version, covering "just about everything" ;) ). if you would like a copy, just PM me.

& the "pointers":
~ as others have stated, look for someone with a history on DIS (member for a while, has a number of posts)
~ check references: can be e-bay (or trade boards) feedback, and/or ref's from prior renters
~ use a contract

and, PLEASE, please: be fairly sure of your dates, etc, & once you find someone you feel comfy with, work with that person only for the ressie.
