How does garbage collection work in your area?

Monday and Thursday is garbage (kitchen). Thursdays they'll also take trash (think lawn clippings) if it's containerized, like in a bag or box. Recyclables is every First & Third Monday. Every second Tuesday of the month is Industrial garbage day...furniture, big tree cuttings, mattress, big stuff that doesn't fall in the other categories.
Note: On the night before Industrial garbage day, we get a lot of independent/personal people scoping out the garbage for things they can recycle/reuse themselves like furniture that's not in bad shape, metals, etc.

Garbage pick up is included in our property taxes. Garbage , recycle an yard waste is all picked up once a week all on same day 3 different trucks that all look the same.

I live in a small township with Garbage pickup once a week (recycling and regular trash) by Camden County on Thursday mornings. Regular garbage is anything goes, but we have to separate the paper from the glass and plastic in our recycling and they fine you if they discover recyclables in your regular garbage. We're also fined if we put the trash on the curb before 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.

We have garbage pick up one day a week. The city provides 2 bins, same size, different colors. One is for trash & the other is for recycling. We take our CRV recyclables to the recycling center to get the deposit back. All other non-refundable recycling goes out in the bin for pick up.

Once we had to be out of town from trash day to trash day. It took weeks to play catch up.

Our city provides special collections at no charge for bulky items. Each household can receive up to 3 bulky items pickups per calendar year but is limited to up to 20 items per pickup, and are provided only by appointment.

The city also accepts Christmas trees for disposal.

Our trash is included on our water bill, vendor is chosen and contracted by our town. Trash pickup once a week, no limit to the number of bags, no special cans to use, and they will take almost anything except appliances and paint. We have curbside recycle pickup once a week, also. Bin is provided by the vendor (same as the trash vendor), and it does not have to be separated; if you need an extra bin, you have to get it yourself from the vendor but there is no charge for it.

My garbage collection in my town is kind of unusual. You have to buy special town trash bags... you buy them in packages, but it amounts to about $2 for a 30 gallon bag. There are ostensibly many local stores that sell them, but many often run out, and only a small handful of large grocery stores reliably have them. Recycling materials (paper, cardboard, aluminum, cans, glass, and any type of plastic) is free. One oversized item per whatever time interval (month? i'm not sure) is also taken for free.

Honestly the biggest pain is just locating the bags, and having to always have some on hand.

Only private companies in my city. Honestly, I have no clue on price. It is included in our association fee. The company has 32/64/96 gallon cans, and picked up on Fridays. Personally, I have a 32 gallon can.

The city does provide recycling for free on the 2nd/4th Friday of every month. These are 96 gallon cans. The city also picks up yard waste once a month April-September. In October/November its every week due to leaves (not in my area though that is taken care of by the lawn guys).

Our recycling and yard waste are picked up on Wednesdays. They give us 2 blue bins to put it in. All yard waste has to be either bagged or placed in a garbage can by itself.

Our trash is picked up on Thursdays. Whatever bags, whatever trash cans that you have. Everything needs to be bagged, though, unless it's too big for a bag. If you have a big item--like a broken couch--you can put it out and they will have a special truck come around in the afternoon to get it.

It's paid through the property taxes.

Oh NYC. Here the majority of people live in apt buildings.Trash is picked up 3 days a week, recycling once a week, and it's all included in our taxes. There is no max to how much you can put out, but lots of rules about how certain things can be disposed. The only things that require special pick-up are fridges or ac's bc their freon has to be removed first. There is no special pick ups for organic material, except for after Christmas when they pick up Christmas trees. I work as a superintendent and I know first hand how wasteful people here are. Sounds like those of you from Canada have a pretty intelligent set-up which is great to see.

Trash is picked up once a week. Ditto for recycling. Bag limit for trash is one container or bag. We provide our own trash can or bag.

We dont pay separately/extra for the service.

We have one large garbage can and one recycle can that get put out once a week. One Friday per Month we can put out extra garbage for separate pick up. The extra pick up is only May to October. Sucks.

Wow after reading this thread I am very happy to have our garbage collection!!

Monday and Thursday is Garage night, you can put most anything out those nights along with household garbage, mattresses, couches etc, old lawnmowers, bikes whatever, as long as they can lift it they take it. There is really no limit on cans- sometimes I have one can and other times I will have 5 cans plus 4 trash bags out there or pick up.

Tuesday is either papers or cans/bottles-every other week for each. Computer and Tvs go out with the can/bottles

Wednesday is yard waste- tree branches, leaves, clippings--anything like that.

If you have a fridge, washer, dryer ("white goods") etc you call up and they will give you a day that week and a special truck will come by and get it.

Where we used to live the rule was ONE trash can per week and it must be fully CLOSED. If it didn't close or stuff was sticking up, they would refuse to take it. Anything not in that one trash can would not be picked up, period.

Where we live now we can put out just about anything and they will pick it up. Three cans, boxes next to the cans, you name it.

Similar here. Normal trash is picked up twice a week. Recycling is once a week. Other Items yard clippings and stuff that's not normal trash is picked up once a week.

I live in Houston. Regular trash once a week, in large container emptied by machine. Recycling (paper, aluminum and tin cans, some plastics) in bins every other week. Lawn trimmings and leaves on regular trash days, but in biodegradable bags. Every third Wednesday is heavy trash...one month is heavy household trash (pretty much anything) and the next month is large yard waste - stacked, but does not have to be bundled. There is a recycling center nearby that takes paint, electronics, glass, chemicals, styrofoam and all the regular recycling. All city services - runs about $20 per month.

Just curious as how other places deal with this. I live in Ontario Canada and currently (in my municipality) we have once a week pick up for organic waste (mostly food) and recycling (one bin for paper, another for glass and plastics). We have bi-weekly pick up for yard waste (in the summer months only) and regular garbage. You are limited to one garbage bag every two weeks, however for $5 you can buy a "tag" to stick to another bag if you need to.

As a family of 5 we have never needed to put out more than one bag every two weeks. It really is surprising how much can be recycled and thrown in the organic waste bin. We don't have any kids in diapers though. For people who do they may need to but additional "tags" or cloth diaper. I couldn't imagine having dirty diapers sitting around for up to two weeks, that alone might encourage me to cloth diaper.:faint: All I know is that when you only get to put out one bag every two weeks you make sure you NEVER miss that garbage truck, especially in the summer!

We have once a week pick up. Everything goes into one bin. Organic, Grass Clippings, what have you. Everything must be in bags. The trash service doesn't recycle. If we want to recycle, we have to take it to the recycling place ourselves. For tree and bush trimmings, pick up is twice a year. Anything other than those times, we must dispose of ourselves. For things like a mattress, we'd have to haul those to the dump ourselves.

Ottawa, Canada

Garbage pickup is biweekly :( (can get stinkly by the time garbage day rolls around)

Green bin = compost is weekly (i have become lazy and rarely use it, if i did it would reduce the stink factor of garbage)

Recylcing : paper and cardboard biweekly alternating with plastic/glass/metal biweekly on opposite week

Paid for via our taxes

Included in my (sky-high) property taxes:

Regular garbage pick-up: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday (no limit, any kind of cans or bags)

Recycle pick-up: Thursday (no need to sort - in town provided bins)

Bulk pick-up: Wednesday (call ahead for furniture, mattresses, appliances, etc)

Yard waste pick-up: Friday

- Laura

Garbage: 32 gallon cart, pickup 1x/week = $14.82/mo

Recycling: 64 gallon cart, pickup 1x/week = Free

Yard & Food Waste (compostable only): 95ish gallon, pickup 1x/week = $14.16/mo March thru November (no collection Dec thru Feb unless paying $3.54 each time dumped during those months)

We have the smallest garbage can available to us which is 32 gallons and usually have one or two 13 gallon trash bags per week. If they offered a smaller bin for less money we would get it instead. We fill up our recycling bin almost every week. Our neighbor lets us put our yard waste (and any food waste) in her Yard Waste bin since she never fills it up and we are too cheap to pay for that. We mow her lawn every once and a while (and shovel snow) for her as a thank you. :)

Oh, and it depends on where you live in the city as to which day your pickup is. We have Friday pickup for everything (so we have to put our carts out in a row 3 feet from each other).
