We have garbage pickup twice a week, as does everyone, but it rolls through the town as to which two days you get. One neighborhood over is on a slightly different schedule than us!
We get recycling once a week - just throw it all into a provided recycling bin, and you can have as many bins as you'd like.
The garbage pick up is anything you choose to put out on the curb. (We also provide our own bins.) If you put useful furniture etc. out, try to put it out before 5PM the day before so that it will have a chance to disappear before pickup. (Old furniture ALWAYS disappears unless it's just good for kindling.)
After a hurricane, yard waste is suspended and at the point that your neighborhood streets looks like a picturesque fence row in the European countryside, a truck will come and grind all the trees and limbs and such into itsy compost/wood chips and leave the street clear.
We also have a special Christmas tree pickup day, not sure how that one works (DH has allergies, so we always have an artificial tree.). We're from Southwest Louisiana, and over there Christmas trees are put out and go onto trucks in January right after 12th Night and get carted down to the marsh for coastal/wetlands restoration projects (You're told not to flock, ever. And everyone's pretty anal about taking everything off the trees so it won't go into the water. I mean, it's not a law, but everyone likes thinking fondly about how their tree is still out somewhere in a marsh, catching sediment, you know?) but I have no idea if they do that here.
