How does Disney differentiate between direct and resale?

If you purchase via resale, are you still eligible for the DVC discounts, like on MVMCP or annual passes?

I realize you can't use your resale points for DCL. If you pay cash for a cruise, are you still recognized as DVC? Do they only recognize direct purchasers?

Minor things, but am just curious.

Currently you are eligible for discounts and resale buyers are identified on cruises unless a mistake is made which sometimes happens.

Answering only the parts I know for sure, we purchased resale. We did get a discounted annual pass. We also receive DVC membership discounts at Disney stores.

Resale buyers get the perk of not being able to use points for low value options.

A critical point is that regardless of whether DVC is a direct purchase or via resale, ALL perks can be modified/discontinued by Disney. The DVC annual pass discount hasn't always been there and may be dropped in the future if Disney deems it beneficial to themselves.

I guess this comment is made only to make sure that nobody buys DVC based on the perks and benefits beyond what is in the contract. If staying at DVC resorts for a somewhat "locked in" cost (escalating every year through dues inflation) isn't a good enough reason to buy DVC, then the purchase shouldn't be made regardless of how it is made.

Also, the options that direct buyers get that resale buyers don't are also not contractual. Disney could drop their relationship with RCI. They could put DCL on hiatus (which they did a few years ago - very few DCL rooms were released for DVC bookings - if you wanted to cruise on points - you functionally couldn't for about eighteen months).

However you buy, make sure you are buying for what you are contracted to get. And make sure you understand what you are contracted to get. Over the term of timeshare ownership - things WILL change. Know what can.

One of the issues with buying resale is that you don't get the contracts - its possible that the broker can get you a copy - and I think they may be out on the internet now. I know when I bought my resale, I didn't get a copy and had very little idea of the terms I'd signed onto - except as they had been explained to me here.

This is great information! I need to find this for myself.

I believe resale buyers always get certified copies of their individual deeds. However, if by 'contract' you mean the Master Declaration of the Condominium Association of the DVC Resort and the Public Offering Statements, then the burden is on the resale buyer to secure a copy. Copies of the Master Declarations and POS for the resorts located at Walt Disney World, Indian River County (VB) and Beaufort County (HHI) can be electronically downloaded for free from the respective county's website.

The best thing to remember is that they have those points locked in to have someone travel at least every 3 years. Whether you use your own points vs. renting them, someone will be using them (unless you just bought DVC just to spend money... in that case, I can PM you my address. I take cash, check, & money order) and therefore, Disney will get their money someway. They don't have to have the discounted AP because as much as people will whine, folks will still buy them at full price (or just buy the amount of days they'd need).

Yep, and I bought a dozen years ago when the only way to get them was to call DVD and ask for a copy to be mailed.

The deed isn't really useful when it comes to the details like "can booking windows be changed" or "what am I actually GETTING"
