How does carry on/checked luggage work?

If you are not participating in OAC (not sure if LA even has this option), your luggage will be waiting for you in the terminal. It will not be sent to the airport for you.

For those wondering, LA cruises do have this option :) We were on a Feb MR cruise and did the OAC. The night that everyone puts their luggage outside their staterooms with the character tags (for finding bags easy in the terminal) we instead got a sheet explaining not to do this, and were given our flight sticky tags that go on your luggage instead (the same ones that the airlines put right on your luggage at the airport).

When we got to our home airport, those tags, along with another set of ones from LAX were on our bags.

No hassle at all.

We have ressies for My Disney Girl Perfectly Princess Tea Party at WDW GF at 10:30 (we are driving our own vehicle). Are we going to have time to eat breakfast, get through customs, find our bags, and drive to WDW to make it to the GF in time (by 10:15)? (I do drive pretty fast, but really don't want to have to drive so fast that I might get any Driving Awards rushing from the port to WDW!) :drive:

You should. But it depends on when they open the doors. If you want to be sure to get off early, either skip breakfast on the ship and walk off as soon as they allow people, but KEEP your luggage with you. Otherwise, you have to wait until they call your tag character and colour. It's about 2 hours from the port to WDW with out delays. If the doors open at 8am, you will most likely be OK, but if there is a delay, and it can and does happen, the doors may not open until 9 or later. It is rare, but people need to know it does happen. The ship is at the mercy of customs when they dock. If a foreign visitor has not checked with Customs and Immigration early there are delays. If the dogs that run the bags for contraband are busy busy, there can be a delay. DCL does not control when passengers can leave the ship. However, once you are able, it is easy and fast. in LA or PC. Vancouver vas a bit confusing, but it wasn't bad.

Can I assume like at the airport it is ok to put a bag with wheels thru the xray? I just bought an awesome soft sided cooler with I would say 2inch wheels that I thought would be perfect to roll my booze around in!!!!

We're doing the disney transfer to wdw after the cruise. Just wondering if we're going to need to collect our luggage and tote it over to the transfer bus, or is it like ME and we won't see the luggage again until it shows up at our resort?

You are only limited as to how many you can carry, pull, push etc. There is limited storage in the cabins, but I have seen couples, no kids, with 2 29 inch spinners, 2 21 inch roll aboards, 2 huge duffels, 2 tote bag sized bags, her big purse, and at least 2 other bags, for a 3 night cruise. I could give them the benefit of the dout and maybe they did a B2B, but come on, there are laundry facilities on boards, you can send stuff out to be washed. Maybe they were going to WDW after? Anyway, they were in the "we will take our bags off ourselves" state of mind. Holy pugoli, not an easy thing by the looks. If I had that much, I would let the room people take most of it the last night and collect it in the baggage area with a porter and a cart.

Are you sure? My understanding is 2 checked bags per person. We just received our cruise documents for our cruise next month, and as expected, received 8 luggage tags for our 4-person party. Do they give you extra tags at the port if you exceed this limit? :confused3

Yes, the porters have extra tags. But keep in mind there is limited storage in the cabins, not just for the empty suitcases, the closets are not huge and there isn't a lot of drawer space.

So you can't carry your own bags off the ship?!

Most cruiseships do give you the option of carrying off your own luggage but you must be able to handle ALL of it without any assistance. You must also be able to have one hand free to hold the handrail at the escalators or you will be turned around and sent to the elevators.

I've seen people struggling to take off all their luggage with small bags stacked on top of their big ones. They were dropping bags and stopping to adjust bags which only held up everyone behind them. It's just not worth the hassle for a few extra minutes......:confused3

Yeah, I wanted to clarify this too. I ASSUME you leave the bags out the night before and they just take them and send them directly to the airport (or in your case, to the resort) for you but just wanted to be SURE that you don't have to collect them in the morning.

Can anyone confirm this?

They may have changed recently but (I don't know for sure) but in the past if you were going to WDW from the ship you HAD to claim your own luggage in the luggage hall and bring it to the bus yourself (or with a porter).

Call DCL to make sure or start a new thread asking this question so recent cruisers can answer.

This made me laugh because it probably going to be us ... if we could be light packers we would be, but when we do big trips its usually 3+ weeks in several climates (this upcoming cruise/trip we'll be in Seattle, Vancouver, Mexico, the Bay Area, DL, Phoenix ... that's 5 completely different eco-systems/weather patterns to prepare for). Add to that costumes for Pirate Night + Halloween Time AND FE gifts ... we're trying to keep it to 1 suitcase, 2 roll-a-boards, 3 carry-ons for DH, DS, + me but that's probably not going to be enough room (thinking about boxing the costumes and FE and mailing to our hotel in Seattle to avoid luggage fees on the plane). Fortunately we've got a 4-person room for 3 bodies so the extra bed will be available for luggage. :rotfl:

Your 4 person room will have a queen that will split into 2 twins, a couch that will flop over into a twin and a bunk in the ceiling. There will be room under the beds to store the empty suitcases, and there may be a bit more on the floor, but that's it. There really isn't an extra bed for storage unless you keep the bunk down all the time, and use the couch to store things on. Even the larger rooms don't have 4 real beds. If you are in a 2 bedroom suite, yes, there are more real beds, but the one bedroom suite has the couch bed and a murphy bed in the wall. Less is always more, you can do laundry on the ship or have it sent out. At Halloween in PHX, jeans and long sleeves are fine, it may be warm to you, but by that time most of us locals are in our winter clothes, jeans, long sleeved shirts and a sweater or very light weight sweatshirt. I don't see the MR being a whole lot warmer, the Pacific is nowhere near as warm as the Caribbean.

Can anyone confirm/answer my last post? It would just give me peace of mind knowing exactly how it works the morning of disembarkment. Thanks :)

I believe MMouse answered your question. However, you might want to call DCL and find out what the current procedure is.

As of October 2010, this was the case.

Also, for those who have never been, don't think airport style conveyor belts where you stand around waiting for your bags to drop out of the chute. You'll walk into a big room where there are different caracter signs hanging from the ceiling. You'll walk over to the area under the sign that matches the tags you were given on the last night and then find your bags. They are arranged in order by cabin number.

How large a suitcase can you fit under the bed?

Thank you!
