How does a points transfer work?

For those who have done a point transfer to another owner, how does it work? Do you have a contract, how do you get paid, what is the typical process? I am thinking about offering up my points for transfer, but I would like to find out more about it before I do.

I have done it a few times, I require full payment before I will transfer. The contract was email transaction between the two of us with price, etc. and how to pay,

Not all owners wanted this...they preferred a split...but I was not so just waited for owners who were fine with it. Once transferred, there is nothing you can do.

Some will do a 3 way call with MS. The new aspect of seeing transfers online will help for sure. I just always got the membership number and called myself.

So you just made up your own "contract" or did you get the wording from somewhere else?

Also - when you say split - they just wanted to pay 1/2, have you transfer the points and then they will pay the rest? I would not be comfortable with that either.

Yes, they wanted a 50/50 split so each person was risking something. And some owners are okay with it,

I made up my own that was pretty simple in that I expected full payment fo X points, at Z price.

Since we are not supposed to get paid for transfers, the contract isn’t going to do much good because DVCM will not get involved. It is not the same level that is needed for when you rent reservations...which do require the contract.

I recently completed my first transfer and I was kind of nervous because it's final once processed. But it worked out at the end. I requested full payment prior to calling MS for the transfer, but I honored reasonable requests of the other party to make him/her feel more at ease.

Thank you for the explanation, I really appreciate it.

What kind of requests, if I might ask? I am just trying to prep for everything that might be asked of me.

How long does it take for the points to transfer? Is the only way to transfer by calling? TIA

You must call and the points will be transferred when you are on the phone. So, if you are getting points, you should see them within minutes,,,,if sending to someone else, same for them!

I'm jumping in here, this seems like a knowledgeable thread and has given me some helpful info. I had someone ask me about a transfer, I was able to let them know that they have to bank the points I transfer because they want to book a trip that isn't 11 months out yet and the points are in my 2021 UY. Does the 50% banking rule affect transfers? So, if I transfer my points to this person and they bank them into 2022, when they call to book a June 2022 trip can they only use 50% of those points? I recommended they call DVC Guest Services to get all of the information before transferring because it is a final transaction, but I thought I would ask here in case you had knowledge about this.

There is no 50% banking rule. There is a 50% borrowing rule.
Ah, yes, you are correct...the person wouldn't technically be borrowing because they are booking in 2022 with 2022 points. My brain scrambles with banking/borrowing sometimes, even after being a member for 18 years, especially with the 50% rule! Thank you for clarifying.

Actually, depending on your UY, you can indeed need to borrow 2022 points to travel in 2022.

For example, if I wanted to travel in January 2022 on my Aug UY and wanted to use 2022 points, I need to borrow since the January trip takes place during my August 2021 UY.

Can you confirm if a member who has transferred between their own memberships in their 2021 UY, can they transfer their 2022 UY points to a different member?

If you are receiving points can you always see them now? Or do you have to call MS? I thought I read somewhere that depending on use year, etc., it might not show up online. Edit: Thanks in advance for any answers.

The system was updated last fall to now have transferred and OTU points show up.

You will see a temporary contract added to your account for the resort the points are coming from.

You will then be able to book with them online 7 months or less. If you want to bank them or use during a home resort priority time, you must call.

Thanks! And thanks for answering all my questions today! We just got our first contract with the points loaded a few days ago, so lots of questions. I appreciate your answers.

Actually, sorry, one follow up here, do the transferred points not retain their home resort priority? In other words, if I transferred in points for a resort that is different then my contract’s home resort, say BLT, would I be able to use them to book BLT at 11 months? Or would I only be able to use them for the 7 month booking window?

Edit: Nevermind, I just reread your last sentence. I see I have to call for home resort priority.

Seems ridiculous😒, DVC allows renting points, but allows transfers, but not for money. Of course they know owners receive money, that rule really needs to be “revisited”... but yet they require both parties to be on a call...
