hi,
if you over do it,the brim which is cardboard with misshape.i used to hold the brim and fill the sink up with cold gentle soap water and just dip the back of the hat in not letting the brim get wet at all.i hope i explained it well enough.

Those forms are okay, but I don't like the way the caps are after they've been through the washing machine. Over the holidays I bought a bottle of spray cleaner at LIDS in the mall.

DH accidentally wore his non-work cap to work, realized it when he was about to wheel under a car and set it in the bay next to where he was working, because it was an off-work day. His boss decides to pull in and never saw the hat and drive over it, leaving nice black dirt all over the hat.

I didn't want to take any chances ruining the hat by washing it and asked the clerk at LIDS what he would recommend. They have two products and I decided on the spray. They also had the form and a product for the washing machine. You need a small brush (DH used a nail brush) and water to aid in removing the dirt and it helps clean the inside band and refresh any odors.

DH's cap looks practically new.

I always run DH's through the washing machine and dryer. They come out fine. I wouldn't do that with a wool or really good hat but these are his hats he wears for golfing.

We put ours in the dishwasher-- lay flat on the top shelf. They come out just fine since they don't get 'wrung out' and twisted like in the washing machine.

I just put it in a basin of water with a little dish soap and some baking soda (gets rid of the sweaty smell), and let it soak for a while.

Then I rinse it off and hang it on the shower head to drip dry.

Comes out nice every time. And smells good too.

I always worry about putting stuff into the dishwasher, because dishwasher soap can sometimes discolor stuff. I remember when I accidentally squirted some onto a dark sweatshirt I was wearing, and it bleached it from navy blue to reddish/pink in the spots where the dishwasher soap splashed.

Thanks everyone.....I am going to try some of these,,may stay with the hand washing.. Thanks again!!

Dishwasher is the best way I've found, too.
