How do you pronounce peridot?

Peridot is the August birthstone. How do you pronounce it?

I voted "doe" because I watch QVC and they say it that way and I would think they would have researched the correct pronunciation of it.

I have actually always said it that way as it is my sister's birthstone (which we always thought was ugly back then).

Marquise is one that gets me, too. One lady on a jewelry show says "Mar-keez". I was always taught "Mar-kee". Sounds better to me but who am I to say?

I guess I've never heard anyone pronounce this because my son was born in August and we've always said it like it looks. How weird -oh sounds to me. The dictionary lists it pronounced both ways so I'll stick with how it looks.

I think it's actually spelled without the E on the end though, so it's a "markee" cut, but Aisling is right, if it has the E on the end, it should be pronounced "markeez". I took way too many years of French.

I was born in August and thought it was the ugliest birthstone. All of my friends would get birthstone rings with beautiful stones like emeralds and rubies. Not me, mine looked like old celery.

Marquise is pronounced "mar-keez", whether referring to a jeweler's cut or the wife of a Marquis (which is pronounced "mar-kee".)

Finally! I've wondered for years how to *correctly* say the word Marquise. I've heard it pronounced *without the "Z" sound* at the end for so long that if someone pronounces it correctly, it sounds strange. In fact, out of all the TV jewelry shows I've watched, only one show host (that I've heard) has said it correctly.

I say it with a 'doe' sound. The t is silent, like merlot and depot. I've never heard it said the other way.

It's my birthstone and we also got married in August (on my birthday) and I think it's gorgeous.

I've always said peridot (like go).

And if any of you could see my 5 ct peridot ring that my DH got me for our
10th wedding anniversary, I bet you'd think it was gorgeous, too.
