How do you pronounce peridot?

Many attribute the Peridot coming from an island off the southeast coast of Egypt in the Red Sea and the word derives from the Arabic "Faridat," the Arabic word for gem and the "t" is pronounced. This is how my jeweler in the jewelry district in NYC pronounces it and since it's my birthstone, I do too. But, both are correct in the dictionary. (Personally, I think it's just easier to order the diamond stuff instead-much less confusion!)

I say it with a 'doe' sound. The t is silent, like merlot and depot. I've never heard it said the other way.

Thanks for the responses. Boy am I surprised this poll is still on page 1. It was just a silly little thing I posted last night to settle a bet. (Doe won.)

As long as some of you mentioned it, the stone is also sentimental to my family. DH and I were married in August and both kids were born in August.

One day, if we ever get a dog, his/her name will be Peridot. And, when I win the Mega Millions tomorrow, we will name our new beach house "Peridottage." (I've always wanted a house with a name. )
