from not smelling rank? LOL!

Hi All!:surfweb:

I'm telling you I clean the cat box at least once every two days and it just doesn't quite get the odor out. :scared1: I don't know what to do. Does anyone use any type of special cat litter? Any ideas?

Thanks All!

I use Tidy Cats. As long as I scoop daily there is no odor.

when was the last time you actually washed it out? That might help, empty it out completely and then rinse it with soap and water, and maybe even vinegar. Then put all new litter in.

I use the clumping litter (whatever kind is on sale or has a coupon) and clean it every day. Once every six months or so, I empty the box completely and scrub it. Never had a problem with odor.

I scrub mine about once a month, use Tidy Cat, clean every other day and (whenever the cats are feeling extra stinky), a sprinkle of baking soda on top.

Could the problem be the source? What do you feed your cat....it makes a difference with what ends up in the litterbox. You might want to try some new food. Just a thought.

I use Fresh Step clumping cat litter and scoop it out everyday. Once a month I also toss out the litter, clean the box, and put in fresh litter. I've never had the litterbox smell bad doing this.

Hi All!

thanks for everyone's quick response!!! No, I never really cleaned out the whole cat box. I have the kind that has the hood over it too! Well, I'll try washing out the whole cat box and put new litter in. I use "Walmart" brand cat litter. But I had the same problem with name brands such as "Arm and Hammer" cat litter.

I also feed my cat Whiska's cat food that comes in those packets. It's a wet type of food. Shall I feed her something different, such as a dry type of cat food. She doesn't like dry that much though.

Thank you!

I use the crystal litter and it is very good with smells. You scoop the 'solids' and stir the litter every day. The crystals cause the liquid to evaporate and absorb the odor. It works so well that when we went to the beach and SIL fed the cats but did not TOUCH the litter box   our house still did not smell like cats.

I use the Fresh Step clumping kind. You guys are going to hate me, but I only clean the litter box about once a year. My cat never uses it. When I notice she has pooped in it, I clean it. I've had the same litter in there for about three years now and it smells new. I grew up with cats and what we always did is take a shoe box and put dirt in it. Put your kitten in the box and scratch her paw in the dirt. They will prefer going outside then. My cat would just about rather die then actually use the litter box. She's never had any accidents though. . .she'll use it if that's her only option. Of course, if you have an indoor only cat then none of this applies.

I have 2 cats and 2 litter boxes. They have hoods as well, that doesn't mean you don't have to clean it completely though. We do that with each box every 3-6 months. Our cats eat dry food almost exclusively, very rarely do they get any wet. Their wet food occurs when water gets splashed into it....LOL We use Tidy Cat Multiple cats but I've used others when they've been on sale. :)

I clean mine twice a day. It really helps in keeping things smelling good in there!

We use S'Wheet mixed with a little Feline Pine clumping. They smell much better than clay clumping litter and are better for your cats (natural.) Some cats clean their paws and the clay clumping litter gets in their stomachs and stays there. I scoop right after the cats go. I empty the old litter out every week and clean the boxes (2) with soap and hot water. Then I spray down with Lysol or Clorox anywhere. They rarely smell. Good quality wet food like Wellness or Merrick will digest better and not stink. If you have to feed dry, Innova Evo is the best. No grains/filler.

I use Fresh Step and it works good. It gets scooped about everytime the cat goes into a lidded trash can in the bathroom & the trash is taken out daily. DH empties the litter once a week, then hoses it down outside with some dawn, dries, and adds clean litter. We only feed our kitty dry food, maybe a pack of wet a month. Wet makes the litter box stink if we feed it to him too much.

Might as well toss in my two cents ---

Over the weekend, I cleaned my cats box with "Nature's Miracle", the stuff that's a "pet enzyme deodorizer." I cleaned out the box, and poured in the Nature's Miracle and let it sit, then rinsed out the box. I believe I got rid of any odor.

I have a Boodah Dome Litterbox, which looks like an igloo with a ramp. It's covered and comes with a compartment to put carbon filters. I just ordered more filters and will change it when it comes. I use Fresh Step litter as well.

Two cats & one hooded litterbox. I use Tidycat Scoopable and 'scoop' once a day (okay...sometimes I forget and it is once every two days.) Everytime I scoop I put a cup of fresh litter on top to help with smells.

Every 4-6 weeks I dump everything out and clean it all, (box, lid and scoops) with bleach. The cat shelter uses bleach all the time so I figure it's what my kitties are used to.

It works for us, as if the box smelled DH would make me get rid of the cats! I live in a trailer and the catbox is at the end of the hallway, right outside of our bedroom.

Now if I could find a way to stop the litter from tracking all over the hallway..... :cat:

It was recommended to us to use Royal Canin dry cat food. Seriously, their poop doesn't smell! We've used nothing but this since the kittens were 7-8 weeks old. (They are now 16+ weeks.) It's a little more expensive and we can only buy it at PetSmart. But it's worth it! My neighbor uses the same stuff and has no complaints.

We do use Tidy Cat clumping litter, if that makes a difference.

I clean it out, sprinkle baking soda down first, then add the cat litter to it.
