One if my best friends always seems to be fishing for compliments. She always talks about how ugly she is, how fat, and how everything is wrong.

At least every 5 minutes I hear "I weigh almost 120lbs. I am so fat!" This is coming form the girl who is 5'9", and has been told by her doctor she is underweight. I know she doesn't have an eating disorder or anything, so that's not bad.

It also makes me feel kind of bad. I only weigh about 10lbs less than her, but I'm ever 6 inches shorter.

It also bugs me becasue I've tried ignoring her, she just takes that as you agreeing with her. I point out that what she is saying is completely untrue. What annoys me most is that people give her a ton of attention over this.

I don't mind if every now and then someone says something like that, but not being able to go through a convorsation about ants without hearing how ugly or how fat she is gets really upsetting and annoying.

Now that I read that, it sounds really a stupid thing to worry about. But, does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with someone like that?

ive only had that happen to me one time, where a friend was always saying she was fat, and im like a really nice person, and sweet, and one time when she said it, it like really got on my last nerve, so i just replied, yeah, you are fat. and she like stared at me blankly, she was so shocked she never talks about her body again. it actually worked, and we are really good friends. im not saying do that, but im just saying it worked for me and my friend.

Next time she says she's fat go..."yes you are."

My friends talk about that every once in a awhile. One of them said it, and it was annoying so I told her. "Yep your right your so fat you need on a diet!" I said that around all of her friends, and she grinned. I told her I was kidding and it didn't bother her. She just responded "Yes I am" and that was it. Usually when one of us says that, everyone is like. "No your not" response: "Yes I am" they say, and it usually just fades out....we don't like say it all the time, but if they did that, I guess I would just ignore it. I'm not sure. Sorry.

That's what I do when my friend does that.
She doesn't realize that she's tall, atheltic and naturally skinny.
I wish she would.

There could be actually something wrong. But if you choose to be insensitive about it, that's fine with me.

there is not a thin line between fishing for compliments and having an eating disorder.

there is a football field between those two. this girl does not have a problem, she just wants people to tell her that shes not fat.

She is doing what every female on earth is guilty of, shes just fishing for compliments.

yep i completely agree.

i mean 120 lbs is a healthy weight.
she sounds like she KNOWS that she's pretty and skinny and all that jazz, but she's just fishing for compliments and wanting attention.

I know how annoying that can get.

Whenever anyone says anything like that I always just sarcastically agree with them.

like;
person: i'm so fat
me: yeah....you're so fat

because sarcasm is my friend.

there is really nothing you can do to stop it though, alot of people are just naturally attention seekers, and they aren't going to stop.

so you can either put up with it....or not.

You're telling me this. I know there is a huge line between those two. HUGE LINE.

I'm just saying you never know. Or it could be the start of an ED. It starts out small.

I don't know this girl, so I couldn't tell you.

My friend does this all the time. She also need to be the center of attention 24/7. Once she says she is fat or ugly I stop responding.

I have a friend who does this too. Just look her in the face and say, "Yeah, you're fat." add a slight pause for her to look at you dumbfounded (if desiered) then ask, "is that what you want to hear?"

works for me.

as for being 5'9 and 120lbs without an eating disorder...I'm jealous! I weight 35lbs more than that and I thought I was skinny. Your friend would think I was a heffer:rotfl:

I'm just saying. You shouldn't jump to conclusions.

I'm really naturally skinny, so skinny I've been accused of anorexia and bulimia countless times. And I've got to say, it's annoying. So I don't think you should be planting ideas in other people's minds of people having eating disorders unless they're showing major signs of it.

I'm not. I just don't think people should jump to conclusions.

But Like I said, I don't know this girl.

If I was you I would say she was fat but make sure you say it in a sarcastic tone of voice.

I have a friend who does that, she's skinny but goes on about how she's huge. I just told her 'look at how fat you are, it's disgusting.' she could tell i wasn't serious but she doesnt talk about it anymore :hippie:

Just make a small, foldable stop sign that says, "Stop!"
