How do you attach your GoPro to your Verandah?

Subject line says it all - what accessory do you use to attach it to the railing?

Don't want my go-pro to go Splash!

All of the Gorilla type tripods will work as well. However, I would never trust one to be attached by itself. I would always want something for extra safety (like a string tied to it).

I used a gorilla pod to attach my gopro to our verandah during our EBPC cruise. I used a string fastened to the chair to tether it incase my gorilla pod came loose. I also have a goose neck clamp but the gorilla pod seemed to attach more securely to the railing.

would this be for a time lapse? If so, I have another question - you have to have power to the gopro for it too work for an extended period of time, yes? Just run the cord out the sliding door? Leave the door unlocked?

I was thinking of using it for maybe sailing in/out of Castaway rather than the duration of the cruise

sounds good. how long will a gopro operate (in time lapse mode) on battery?

Thanks everyone. Out of curiosity, how would you use a tripod on the veranda?

I have used a tripod on my deck before. If your tripod has a hook I would hang a bag with some items in it to give it some weight. But, there is plenty of space to easily tuck it into one of the corners and still have space to sit and enjoy the deck. It also won't be subject to a lot of wind, which could be tough for time lapse photos.

There are a lot of factors to this question so it's not a quick answer, you should research based on your model and expectations of a video result.

Which GoPro do you have (the models vary in battery life)?
"Time-lapse" is not a setting-- you set it up to take a photo on an X interval and then in post-production you weave those photos together to make a time-lapse video. So you could be taking a photo once every minute, or every ten seconds, for example. These variations use the battery differently.
Do you have LCD back on or not?
Etc, etc...

Setting it up and letting it go for several hours is very possible, just not a quick answer.

Fun stuff though!

Things to consider....
  • battery life
  • cleaning staff.... they visit the veranda at least twice a day

If you put that on YouTube, please post a link for us. I'd love to see it!

I did that with no time lapse. An unexpected benefit was that the video ended up catching the family enjoying and commenting on the experience without taking note of the camera. It was some of the best video from our trip. You can always speed it up later in post-editing.

Btw., the most important accessory by far for me turned out to be the double battery charger. I never used a selfie-stick: just holding the GoPro by hand worked fine.

GoPro video is so awesome! The resolution is so high that, during editing, you can zoom in on a small window and make a perfectly nice video of just that close-up. I bought Final Cut Pro and highly recommend that (for Mac only, I think).

Thanks - any other tips you'd recommend? This will be our first family holiday (daughter @ 18 months) so I am excited to document it by means of video.

I love making videos of our WDW trips, and will do the same on our upcoming first DCL cruise-- not because I want to be a YouTube sensation, but because I want to capture the fun and memories for ourselves!

My best tips are:

  • Practice a lot with the GoPro BEFORE your trip to become comfortable with filming, mounts, cases, and carrying it among your adventures. You want it to feel natural when filming, not trying to learn new technology and also enjoy your vacation at the same time, this will get stressful for you. This way you are IN the moment and not getting distracted or fumbling with the camera, you are enjoying everything too.
  • Record your family's adventures as much as possible (but don't be "that guy on the ship with the camera everywhere", ha!). On our last 8 day WDW trip I returned with nearly 7 hours (almost one 64GB micro memory card) of footage. My completed video is an hour. The best way to get the best shots is to film a LOT so you have options when narrowing down footage. Record "stock footage" too, get scenery and general ship atmosphere shots for transitions and ways to help tell your story and remember the scene.
  • Watch other families' videos online -- this isn't creepy. It's the best way to get a sense of what you want YOUR video to look and feel like. Having images or shots, or emotions in your mind ahead of time enables you to then FILM that on your own trip. I got great ideas for certain locations, feelings, or cute kid-stuff I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. It's not copying others, it's getting inspired and understanding what the GoPro and these videos are capable of.
  • TEST your waterproof case-- seal up a tissue inside and submerge if you are new to the GoPro and not used to how it properly seals. Don't test your case closing skills for the first time with the camera inside.
Let me know if you have other questions, it's become a fun technical and somewhat creative hobby of mine that enables us to capture and save our memories in a different way than photos (that's my husband's hobby!).

My husband set up his Canon 60D on a tripod on our last Southern cruise... at the time I thought he was nuts but we ended up with some very nice videos from it. He tied it to the balcony handle and also the table I think (this was on RCCL). We did have a surprise one morning when we sailed through a little drizzle cloud where we had to hustle back to the room though..!! :umbrella:

Some great tips - thank you!
What about the fog inserts ? Are they necessary? I sometimes notice my sunglasses fog up once I go from indoors to outdoors?
