How do yall get to a DVC resort? Plane, train or automobile

How do you arrive in the World? We have flown all 3 trips and are flying "home" for 1st time soon. I told DW since we know we will be going annually now that we are in DVC, we may have to drive, she responded with a big UH-HUH! We are about a 11 hr. drive, we live near a very major hwy. in NC and have to experience a lot of CRAZY drivers everyday on that hwy.

So with that said, what form(s) of transportation do you use to get there, why, and where if you feel comfortable to tell do you arrive from and how long does it take you to get there. If you want to generalize your location then say NW, NE, SE, N, S, etc. Thanks for replies.

Well, seeing as though I make my living as a pilot, my wife makes us DRIVE! ....no kidding!

oops...We live in Connecticut. Non-stop would be about 20 hours, depending on NY traffic.

For now we always fly(Pittsburgh or Cleveland to Orlando) so it is only a 2 hr flight. When we have more time (retiring in 5 yrs) we will probably drive down and stay 4-5 weeks in the winter months. We will be able to stop at HH on both ends of the trip to break up the drive.

We live in Wisconsin and have flown the past 4 times and will be flying again in about 16 days . For us it would be about a 23 hour drive probably 28 hours with the kids . We will drive sometime in the future when the kids are older and we can take 2 weeks off but for now flying is the way for us. We have to drive about 2 hours to get to the airport and that is far enough with the kids who are 7,2,1.

Being from the middle of Kansas we always fly. It still makes a pretty full day, but it's certainly better than a 21 to 25 hour drive!
I just feel lucky we can go as often as we do!

If the price is better than Cleveland, we have no problem driving to Pittsburgh's airport. They are both only 1hr 15 minutes away from us.

We have traveled by both plane and car. My DW is not crazy about flying and I managed to get her in a jet for 2 vacations, but since 9/11 she will never get into a jet again! We drive from central NJ straight through - it about a 17 hour trip with limited stops along the way. We typically bring some food in the car and only stop for gas/bathroom breaks. We have 2 children and they watch movies or play video games and its really not that bad. The way I figure it, if I want to go to WDW, I have few options, so we make the best of it.
We'll be back home in Jan '03!

We also always fly out of Islip. I couldn't handle the 20 some odd hour drive. Thankfully, we have been able to do it this way.

BTW, I have you beat! We leave 7 am on Sunday

We always drive. I promised myself many years ago I'd never fly again after a very scary experience but then I backed down when we went 2 years ago because we had a 7 month old. I held my breath all the way there and all the way back. So, we're going to do the driving route time and time again. Next month we'll leave at noon on Friday and expect to be in Orlando Saturday night. The TV/VCR for the kids helps alot (for DH too!).

What Nick said, except that we are already retired.

Our "Vacations" average about 4 - 8 weeks each so having our own car is a must. The drive from here is about 15 hours not counting stops so it's not too bad. We drive halfway...there's a Fairfield Inn we usually stay at, and finish the next day. We'll spend about 10 days at Disney, then spend time other places in Florida, including VB on occassion.

On the way back we like to stop at HH for a few days, and we can follow that up with further stops: Asheville, Smoky Mountains, etc..

Makes no difference which direction we go. We just got back a month ago from our out West trip. 6000 miles driving. There's a lot to see when you can stop anywhere you want. You miss an awful lot at 30,000 feet up.

So for us, driving is the only practical way to do it.

Now as for Hawaii...., I think we'll fly.

We usually fly either from Hopkins or out of Pittsburgh but for this our first ever DVC trip we're driving. We'll spend a few days at HH and then OKW. We are very excited. We leave late tonight and I haven't started packing yet. My sister and her husband are joining us for the HH portion of our trip and I hope they like their studio. We're also taking one of my younger brothers too!

We actually drove to Hilton Head last December and the drive was absolutely lovely. You can't see sights like we did from a plane so we are really looking forward to the drive.

We always fly.. The last time I drove, and actually the first time, was about 10 years ago.... It wasn't bad, just LOOOONG... I cannot, and won't, drive straight through so it ends up taking 2 days... We live by Chicago so it takes about 20 hours from what I remember. A couple of times we had planned on driving, and then I always manage to find a cheap airfare in this competitive Chicago market so we end up flying.. That way we end up with 2 extra days in Florida....

Always fly. From NY my kids would be bouncing off the walls along with Mom and Dad. Can't beat a 2 hrs flight.

The tragic loss of 3000 people on 9/11 scared a lot of people away from flying. What goes unreported is that about that many people died in car accidents from 9/12-10/10 and every 28 days or so every year. Deaths in airplane crashes are newsworthy because they are so unusual. If they reported every car crash death the same way the news would have no time for other news (40,000+ every year).

Why do I bother posting? Well- I will paraphrase Penn of Penn and Teller (employed by Disney from time to time) and I will clean it up because he was much crueler in his asessment BUT basically he says that silent acceptance of the idea that air travel is somehow more dangerous than car travel can't help but allow this incorrect and wrong idea to fester and persist. This leads to more and more people driving instead of flying which leads to more and more road deaths because driving IS less safe than flying...(that is not opinion that is fact based on deaths per people doing it)--thus there are preventable car accidents if people did not decide to drive instead of fly based on wrong understanding of the safety issues... (he goes on to note that perhaps one of those preventable crashes will involve a school bus of promising young children one of whom might be the next Einstein,etc...you get the point) I am just trying to say what ever can be said that might save lives.

Yes, you guessed it, we always fly!!!!

However, we don't always fly directly London to Orlando as there is too little competition making the fares very high ($1,000 per person during the children's summer holidays). Instead, we leg through places like Atlanta or Cinncinati with the better value American carriers.

We always drive. My husband absolutely hates to fly. We just put the car into automatic pilot, and somehow find ourselves in Orlando!
