ack - what am I doing wrong? how long do they need to soak? etc
Help - they arent getting clean - thank you
I have about 70 1985 and earlier

How about ketchup? And the last thing that I soaked in this had to soak for a couple of days.

Vinegar with large amounts of salt should do it. Make sure you dry them off very well after you soak them.

I've found that when they go through the washing machine, they come clean very easily. I've found that out quite a few times when I've left change in my pockets. Dirty pennies come out shiny

I soaked some pennies in lemon juice, and they came out great- I let them soak for about a half hour or so, and then rinsed with water and dried them off.

Lisa

PS- I have also used ketchup before, and it works too!

Take some tin foil put on a paper plate.. put pennies on it.. sprinkle baking soda on them( arm and hamor works great) then pour vinegar on them.. works great every time. :earsgirl: 52 days to go and counting

This was my daughter's science fair project (2nd place in the 3rd grade division!) and soy sauce worked the best. She put the pennies in for one hour.

 Coke. A soaking in Regular Coke should do it- maybe overnight?
Worked when we were kids!
:)

As kids we used to clean pennies off with a pencil eraser..worked pretty good, never tried soaking them... :sunny:

I just tried the hot sauce trick and it worked really well. Soaking them didn't do much, but just lightly rubbing the sauce on the coins was what did the trick.

Maybe it was just me, but I spent several days picking out pre 82 pennies and cleaning them and arranging them and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between those pennies and the brand new ones I ended up using when I ran out of the other ones! But hey, I still prefer the sound of an LP to a CD!!

That is what I do also. I just get one of the big white erasers from the art section at walmart and 'erase' all of the dirt away.

I've heard this works before.

If you've got some extra Taco Bell hot sauce packets left over from your last visit, they work great.

I used this. It cleaned them REALLY well, but they are not shiny any advice?
