I plan to take my family to Disney in a couple of months. My husband and I have 4 children ages 9,7,5, and 1. I was told that I would be required to have 2 rooms at allstars because I have more than 4 people. Is there anyway to avoid this? Thanks!!

Even though the 1 year old "doesn't count", you still have 5 other people and the rooms are only designed for 4 at All Stars. That is due to fire codes. You will either have to get a family suite, or upgrade to a resort that allows 5-6 in a room. Try Alligaotor Bayou in Port Orleans Riverside. I feel for you, my SIL is taking her family of 5 down in June and has to stay at Riverside also. Disney really doesn't cater to larger families on a budget. Hopefully in the future they will address this problem.:confused3

Welcome to the DIS!!!
Sorry but there isn't a way around this. You could get a family suite at All Stars Music resort, or a room at Port Orleans Riverside that has the extra trundle bed. Or a deluxe resort room. The ASMu suites sleep 6 and are about $179 a night during value season.
Here is a link to mousesavers.com that has all the rack rates for 2007:

Even if you don't count the 1 year old, you still have too many people for that room. You could look into getting a room at a different resort, as some of the deluxe resorts have 5 person rooms and also the cabins accomodate more people. If you are just trying to keep costs low, it would probably be cheaper to get to adjoining rooms at the all stars.

Except for the family suites at the All Stars, value resorts will only accomodate four plus a child under the age of three who will sleep in a pac-n-play.

You might be better off booking one room at Port Orleans Riverside which would accomodate four plus a child under eight in the trundle plus a child under three in a pack-n-play. That option would almost always cost less than two value rooms.

you can either get a family suite at allstar music, sleeps 6 plus 1 infant (under 3) or you can get a room at POR sleeps 5 plus 1 infant. Otherwise with just you , your spouse and the 3 kids over the age of 3 you are already over the head count allowed (4 plus 1 infant).

Unless you get a family suite at All-Star music there is no way to avoid getting a second room. Even with the 1 year old "not counting" that is still 5.

Your options are:
Family suite at All-Stars
2 connecting rooms at a resort
or 2bdrm villa at one of the DVC resorts.

While a children under 3 won't be counted in the room occupancy, the only resorts that hold 5 plus an under 3 child are some of the deluxes or the Ft Wildreness cabins. They do have the all star suites but they are more expensive that 2 all star rooms. Look at the floor plans, 2 rooms, give you 4 beds and two bathrooms. With the suite you get a refrigerator and a microwave.

We are also six, no one under 3 anymore and our cheapest option is 2 rooms.

The only way to avoid this at the allstars is to get a family suite.

Check out this thread......

Leave your Husband and one of the kids at home.

Oh, I am sorry I see I missed one of the children I thought you only had 3:) I also have four the only way we could stay in the same room last may was to stay at the poly, beauitful but expensive! In december I rented adjoining rooms, outside of that the allstars has the suites but when I added the price for 2 rooms we realized that the suite cost a little more and we would have more space with the 2 rooms.

Unfortunately, the less expensive rooms do have smaller capacity. You'll need to choose between the family suites or two rooms if you wish to stay at the All-Star Resorts.

We have 4 children as well and believe me, you wouldn't want to have that many people in one value room! We usually do 2 adjoining rooms at Pop and that gives us lots of room (and 2 bathrooms!)

I was just going to post this same thing. We have 4 children as well (and travelled to WDW before the youngest was 3, too). We have consistently ended up with 2 value resort rooms. With AAA or AP discount, this has been our cheapest option. And we open the connecting door a little, put the kids to bed, and can stay up later ourselves. Oh, and 2 showers + toilets helps too!

This year is the first year we can't stay in one room at POP. So we are either getting joining rooms or even upgrading to a moderate that sleeps 5. It sucks because my 3 year old sleeps with us so we all could still use just two beds, but I understand the rules are there for a reason..:teacher:

Not sure if this has been considered BUT what about renting points and staying at a DVC ?

That way you have 2 bedrooms. A full kitchen where you can cook some of your meals and possibly save a bit of money.

Just a thought.

A 2 BR DVC is going to cost almost double the cost of two rooms at a value resort. If the OP is already balking at the cost of two rooms, I doubt she'll want to pay four times as much.

Do the rooms for 5 at POR only work if one is under 8? I was hoping to do this for 5 of us but my girls will be 10. Will they not give us this type of room or is it just not comfortable based on size? One of mine is very small so I'm sure size would not really be an issue.
