How did your 5 yr. old do on the plane?

I always bring a laptop anyway, so we watch movies for the trip. We bring toys and leapster too so they stay busy. I usually try to keep a new movie that has come out recently in "holding" as a special thing for them to watch.

I have been racking my brain trying to think of something to draw my DD's (5) attention away from the flight. She is a bit timid by nature. I'll never forget having to climb halfway up the tube at McDonald's playground when she discovered her fear of heights. Thank you so much for the Polly Pocket suggestion!!! :thumbsup2 She has wanted them but as she has a 2yo brother she has not gotten them yet. I had planned to have a small surprise for them to open, something new , just wasn't sure what now to figure out what to get my DS...My mother also told me about chewy granola bars for the take off and descent, instead of gum which is easily swallowed by little ones.

When my youngest DD was 5, we were flying to Disney - DD was so excited - she kept saying she hoped the plane would pass over her school so she could wave to all her friends. (She had flown before, when she was almost 3 and really slept through the flight.) But, she couldn't wait for December to hurry up and come!

Well, we got on the plane and as the plane just starts to back up, she decides she doesn't like this afterall. She wants to get off. I hugged her, and got out her stuffed puppy and we were hugging and I was talking to her about Disney. When the engines really started up so we could start taking off, she was terrified and crying. This started all the kids around us crying. The look of fear on her face... I was thinking that this would be a LONG flight to Orlando. Fortunately, once the plane was in the air, she quieted down and was OK. She got a little scared for landing, but we played a game of looking for the castle. (And I didn't have the heart to tell her we'd have to fly again to get home)

The next time we flew, DH was with us and he made everything OK.

Since then, she's flown quite a few times, including a trip to Las Vegas, and has been fine. Coloring books and hidden picture books work best with her. And, I always bring some snacks that she doesn't always get when we're home. Thankfully, our flight to Orlando is less than 1.5 hrs.

Just be prepared for anything! (I had no idea she would be afraid to fly) Have a great trip!

My daughter was 5 last november when we were there last. She was
wonderful on the plane. Our flight was at 6:30am and she stayed awake
from when she awoke at 2am till she went to sleep at 8pm.

My DD has flown since she was 1.5 and has done great. It helped to have her carseat on the plane because she knew she had to stay in it.

She will be 5.5 on our next trip and I expect her to do well. It will be the 1.5 yr. old that I will be worried about. ;)
