House Hunters TV Show

The only thing that bugs me about the shows, however, is the conversation a couple has when they see the master bedroom closet. It's always some joke, like the woman says, "Sweetie, where will YOU put all of your clothes?" Haha. All women are chronic shoppers whose closets are overflowing.

That bugs me too because I am NOT a shopper! Then I realized I'd probably say the exact same thing to my husband for two reasons.

1) He's a neat freak and would love to have his own closet so he wouldn't have to see my "mess." (I put mess in parenthesis because I'm not messy - I'm just not as tidy as dh.)

2) When dh and I bought our first house, an older home, the master had a very small full length closet. Right next to it was a large linen storage closet with shelves and doors. I immediately said we'd take the shelves out and put in a closet rod and it would be dh's closet since he didn't need full length. DH was horrified until I did it and all his clothes fit in it - he had more hanging space than I did.

DH liked to think he was "kicked out" of the closet. Now he misses it because he has to share with me and look at my stuff!

I, too, like watching this show and it helped me out when my husband and I purchased out first home (we just closed a week and a half ago).

We actually planned on buying last year. We started out without an agent, visiting new home communites to see what was selling at different price points. We had no idea what we could get approved for, but we kept things reasonable (under $200k). I found two neighborhoods I liked built by the same builder, so my dream was to either buy a new or resale home from this builder, however, I knew once we got an agent an older home would have some trade-offs that a newer/new homes wouldn't (such as new homes today have tiny bedrooms compared ot older homes).

So we waited, things came up and we didn't buy last year.

Then in April we got serious again (well we thought about just renting, but for what we could pay in rent in the area we are moving too, we could buy), so we started looking. I found an agent, and told her my specs. The house we purchased was the second one we looked at, but to be fair and sure we looked another day.

I'm sorry, but you couldn;t beat what we were getting for the price ($139,000) -- 4 beds/2 bath. 2100+ sq feet. In a neighborhood, built by the builder I liked. It was a resale, built in 2003, under short sale. It was orignally listed for $159,000, then dropped to $149,000 by the time we looked at it. We were approved for $150,000, but I never planned on buying that high because I knew one could make offers. We had another contendor in the $129,000 range but it had less space. So because of circumstances, we were able to buy a bit more house than we need, but at a price we could afford.

Now as for house hunter buyers.....they would HATE this house. The colors are all wrong, no stainless steel. Filthy, filty, FILTY (I've been cleaning/painting for the past week). When I first walked in, I was disappointed because of the vast amount of cosmetic work to be done (we even changed the toilet seats because they WOULD NOT come clean), but as we looked at other homes, it grew on me, and at the most, to move in, it just needed cleaning, painting, and new carpet. I saw that it had good bones, and knew that the systems were in good order (but I did do a home inspection just to be sure). We are almost done with cleaning and painting and are movign in this weekend. I can see already it is coming out beautifully.

And the best part? The neighborhood is STILL under construction with NEW homes that are listed and sell for $169,000-$180,000. Some are smaller, some are bigger. Once we get it cleaned up, new paint, new carpet it is once again compareable to what others in GREAT condiiton are selling for in the neighborhood. However, if I had been like one of the typical buyers on HH, i never would have given it a chance. In fact, while viewing it for the second time, my husband and I joked with each other "Oh, we don;t like the paint! What, no granite? This place is too dirty." A little sweat equity and we have our dream first home.

Oh, I shoudl emntion that we aren't your typical young, newly married, first time buyers. We are in our mid thirties, made mistakes with money int he past, and learned our lessons well about how to spend/save money. I will mention that I did receive an inheritance from my granfather when he passed and we used PART of that for the downpayment. I was goign to put moe down on the DP, but we got an FHA loan at 4.75 interest and only paid 3% down at closing to have a bit of change for new carpet/paint, and a new piece of furniture or two. Our plan for next year is to make extra payments every so often.

I could have chosen a new home, pick out everything, but been house poor. The years of whatching HH helped me to recognize a good deal when I saw it.

---------

Oh I do have to say it irks me on Property Virgins when the host asks the couple what's your budget and how much do you have to put down and then says they can have a house at budget + DP. Like their budget is $350,000 and they have a $40,000 DP so the host will say "Okay we'll look at homes for $390,000" That's when I scream "Nooooooo. Stay under $350,000" Luckily our agent did not do that. I would have shot her. She maxed her searches out at $150,000 and nothing over (not even $151,000).

I love HH so I can see home styles in other parts of the country. What cracks DH & I up is how everyone needs a home office! We've been married 32 years & have managed just fine without one! LOL! :happytv: And someone always says "there's a lot of light". As soon as DH sees me watching this show he just says " I bet there's a lot of light i that house!" :rotfl2:

But I always wonder about these young couples paying so much for their first homes. I'd love to know how these people make out a few years later. Are they the ones who caused the housing crisis? :confused3 Or am I just jealous?

I think that this is exactly what caused the housing crisis along with the banks. There are a great deal of people who were offered and took huge mortgages that they could not afford. My husband and I bought our first home 5 years ago at the ages of 25 and 22. We bought a townhouse, not ideal, but a first home. Meanwhile our friends bought huge houses that they could not afford. One actually said they just verbally stated their income. As a result we just sold and bought a new home and most are in a pickle.
The documentation required now is very strict and makes me wonder why it hasn't been like this in the past.

Someone correct me if I am wrong
I understand it was like that in the past (strict). Then when mortgage backed securities became the hot investment -things changed. Wall Street wanted mortgages to invest in. There was a big demand. So more and more pressure was put on lenders to lend money -to come up with investments. That is when the qualifications to get a loan got so lax. Then we had the banking crisis and lenders got strict again.

It also seems that they knew that they were going to buy the Bananarama business/property all along and that they looked at the others for the show.

I don't know, it wasn't deceitful exactly, but they really didn't explain things fully.

Yes, this is how the show works. The people already have a place picked out, and they find 2 other properties to add to the mix for the show. I read this somewhere a little while back.

My DH always says " Oh it has great natural light, Lots of space (Emphasis on the "S"), and its a great place to entertain" :rotfl:

When we bought our house the sellers were in the process of building a $300,000+ home and were "using it as an investment purpose". Guess their investment isn't too great now!

The young woman I know in Florida is making 125K, more than older, more experienced pharmacists I know of in other areas of the country.

That is pretty close to what Pharmacists make around here and we still could not afford to pay that much for a house. Even if I was not a SAHM we could not afford it. Well I guess we could if we didn't want to have 2 cars, go on vacations or go out to eat. I refuse to live for my house!

I like HH, especially if they are looking in someplace uniqe, like SoCal or Hawaii. Midwestern surburbia? Not so much. I LOVE HHI! I am ready to move into a restored monastary in Italy or cave house in Spain! Sign me up!

Typical House Hunter Lines:

Look honey, two sinks!

Wow, look at that view!

What are they building next door?

I like this place but it's at the top of our price point.

There's no grass, nowhere for (fill in kid or dog's name) to play.

We love our home, but with the new baby we need more space.

I'm not loving this color.

The bedrooms are too far apart, I wouldn't be able to hear little (fill in kid's name) when he wakes up.

I love the OPENESS. I could be cooking and watch little (fill in kid's name) play!

Honey, I love it but there's no POOL!

I like this place but it's not close to a.nightlife b. my parents c. my job
:rolleyes1

Any more????

I also love house hunters . From time to time my dh will watch and we like to see which of us picks the same one as they do.

That's a nice feature. ( sounds so....realtor-speak)

I can see us....A. BBQing. B. Hosting a lot of gatherings C. Doing cart wheels
.....in/out here.

Looking at a perfectly good room...this room needs A LOT of work.

When they see a potential hazard.....
That's not going to work ( a body of water, busy street corner, potential inspection problem

How did I forget that one??? They say it EVERY show. I can see us drinking coffee out here... MAN, I wish I had that much time to relax!! :lmao:

What is with all of these people buying houses because of their dog? I can understand looking for a fenced property if you have an outside dog - but some of these people act as if the pet's concerns are much more important than their own.

Okay GUILTY as charged :lmao: but to make a LONG story short I was with 2 different dog rescues (now we have 8) and I rescued a horse Soooo as a first (and last) time homeowner I only had 2 requirements so the realtor loved me...must have property (got it 2.5 acres) and must must have 2 bathrooms...married ' nuff said :lmao: I raised my 2 legged kids, these are my 4 legged kids....I would live in a tent for them

It is a concern if you have a big dog. They need to be exercised and if not some can become distructive.

I don't get why everyone is so judgemental of the people of HH. I would never buy an older house, I don't like fixing up and besides it is only going to cost more money in the long run to fix it up and personally I don't want to move into a house and start working on tearing it up to change it.

As far as price goes, sure some are expensive, but some people can afford it, not everyone is going in debt just to buy a house. Sure some are but not all, so we can't assume that is what is going on. I have friends that are pretty young and do have a substantial amount of money, in fact one is a multimillionair. So we can't know for sure what their finances are, and I hate to say that everyone is going in debt just because they are looking at a house that maybe some of us can't afford.

I'm on LI also and luckily we bought our house 13 years ago before the prices went insane otherwise we would never be able to afford a house. The real estate prices plus taxes will be driving many, many younf couples out of here:sad2:

DH and I have been married for 11 years this September. In 1999 when we got married, houses here were mostly in the $100k to $200k range. Friends of ours bought their house for about $180k. When the market sky-rocketed, their house went up to the $600K range (Holtsville area) :scared1: It's not worth that much anymore, but it's still way too high for my tastes. Even though the housing market has come down to the $300 - $400K range, most houses are still $500K up to over $1 million.

<Sigh> I miss the "good-ol'-days" where one could afford a home.

I love this show! Does anyone know what the people get for being on the show? I mean what is the incentive to do it? It seems like a ton of work/coordination, camera crews, production crews etc. Does the show pay them?

The link I posted before said they are paid $500. It's not a lot and they seem to have to do a lot of filming - but I guess people are happy just to get on TV.
