I posted this on the transportation board, but haven't had any bites yet, so I figured I would ask here as well.

We are driving down in Feb, and are looking for reasonable cheap, clean hotels just off the highway in the following locations:

I-90/I-79 Erie, PA.
I-95 St. George, SC.
I-95 Jacksonville, FL.

Thanks in advance,

Someone may have more specific info, but having travelled those highways very, very often, the wife and I - rather than deciding ahead of time exactly where we will stay - always pick up one of those free Interstate Hotel/Motel Coupon Books available at most travel plazas/welcome centres. The ads - most from major chains - give locations and directions (usually right off the highway), details about the hotel and its rooms, such as on-site restaurant, continental breakfast, TV channels, pool, etc., along with rates, and of course money-saving coupons.

Since the best laid plans, especially with winter driving, can change unexpectedly, these books provide several options, as they cover several states at once, and are updated more frequently than most guide books. If I were you I'd pick one up at the Angola Travel Plaza along I-90 (your first real opportunity to stop outside of Buffalo); they're located just inside the entrance, across from that mini McDonald's counter that I've never actually seen open ...

We too, use the coupon books. It gives us more flexability regarding weather, of perhaps we want to drive a few more miles. There are a lot of hotels along the way, so finding a room was never a problem. Once, I even had a hotel accept a coupon that had expired.

I admire your free-spiritedness. I would never be able to leave home without reservations.

Can you tell me where you have stayed where you had a good experience? We've seen good hotels and bad hotels on the road, and don't want a repeat of the latter.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Jacksonville just off I10 near the airport. The room was beautiful, the pool warm and all of their hotels offer an excellent breakfast ~ free of charge!

I highly recommend them anywhere in the USA. Most of them are new and for our family of four that saves us $15 for breakfast.

:p
