Hotels near Hollywood Studio walkable?

We stayed at Boardwalk and while on the boatride to HS noticed many people walking - there is actually a nice path/walkway along the water that will go to Boardwalk, Swan/Dolphin and Beach or Yacht Club

Cigar, you're right. You gave me the idea to look back at the historical imagery. The crosswalk at Victory & BuenaVista is clearly visible, from Jan 1999 all the way thru Jan 2012. Then it seems the street was re-sealed & re-painted (but without the crosswalk) sometime before the Oct 2012 photo. Hmmph.

Well those stinkers! I'm assuming they probably also removed the walk/don't walk lights as well.

But very interesting - there's a way to access older imagery? As a WDW history geek, I must request - do tell, do tell!

I use Google Earth.

Open Google Earth. In the upper left, click the View menu to make sure the "Historical Imagery" option is checkmarked.

Then look at the very top of the photo. There's an icon that looks like a clock. Click it to view older years.

P.S. Call me jaded, but seems like Disney found a good way to force the CaribbBeach guests to buy goods at the CBR food court instead of the gas station. I guess Disney has more support at the city planners office than Hess does

CBR is the most affordable of the hotels near Hollywood, so I will probably make my rsvtn there. I will probably still walk, keeping safety in mind.

There is no way I would do this. Swamp + major roadway + an area not lit for pedestrian traffic? And tack a two mile walk ahead of or following several miles of park walking, while saving little or no transportation time? There's also no guarantee that that mowed grass you fear no snakes in will actually be mowed.

No way, no how, nuh-uh. Yo ho, yo ho, an air-conditioned bus for me.

(Then again, I'm also nutty enough to have walked from the TTC to the back way in to the Wilderness Lodge. Strangely enough, it was a cast member at the TTC who gave me the directions!)

Not that I would try it (I'd be too terrified of the cars, snakes, and gators), but out of pure curiosity, how in the world did you pull that off?

You can see one route if you take a Disney bus (or drive) to Wilderness Lodge. (Road near bottom of photo below.)

The other route would be to the CM parking lot. (That road is toward the top of the photo below.)
Likely that is the "back way" mentioned.

That's it exactly - in the center left of the photo, you see a road heading out the *back* of the TTC. That road empties on to World Drive. If you continue straight across instead, there's an unmarked (I believe) road. That road takes you right into the CM parking lot for the Lodge, and drops you out just north of the main entrance to the building.
This route is less safe than the CBR walk we've been talking about, as one has to cross World Drive with no signal or any other protection. It was mostly a case of doing it for the sake of doing it, like the friend of mine who years ago took a drive down the VSTOL runway because it wasn't blocked off in those days.

Looks like a nice little stroll, just under 1 mile each way. Looking at those photos of WL led me to notice the Fort Wilderness area...I had no idea it was such a large expanse of land! It looks to be ~3 times the size of Magic Kingdom!!! I had no idea. No wonder people stay there... what a stark contrast from the shoulder-to-shoulder of MK.

Why in the world would you not just walk?

Because it's dangerous?

It might look like an easy walk, but once you're there you know it's got pitfalls. It's not set up for walking, or everybody would do it.

I think the OP is looking for a cheaper altenative to the Epcot resorts. but the reason CBR is cheaper is because it isn't easy to walk to parks from there.
