ahhhhhh Rome!!!! I am so happy for you and jealous!
I was there several years ago and had a fabulous time! I went there with a group of friends and some stayed at the Hotel Fontana and we stayed at The Trevi Hotel. Both are located in the Heart of Rome.
The Hotel Fontana was directly across from the Trevi Fountain. It used to be an old convent and has a lot of little rooms. Mind you both of these hotels are rated very high but they are not like say... a Wyndham Hotel in the states. But you are in ROME!!! (Did I say how envious I was???)
The Fontana does not have a sitting room or much of a reception area but grab yourself a bottle of wine and sit at The Trevi Fountain. It is such an experience watching the people at the fountain. If you do stay here, you might want to keep in mind that the Fountain has lots of noise up until the very small hours of the morning. People gather and sing, drink, and laugh. Also, we were there in the summer and it was warm and there was no air conditioning in the front rooms because there is a code for appearances since it is in a Historical area. Also.. some of the rooms had showers that were no more than a tiled slant in the corner of the room with a shower head and a curtain.
The Trevi Hotel is just around the corner from the Fonanta down a little alley. This hotel actually had a separate room for a bathroom but was just as small but very nice.
Both Hotel's had rooftop gardens where you could go up in the morning and have breakfast. They had a little buffet with coffee and breakfast buns.
Both hotels are within walking distance to the Coleseum, Spanish steps, The Parthenon, all the major sights.
If you are going to rent a car make sure you know how to drive a standard!! We had a rough one with that!
One of my favorite restaurants there is De Mao Pattaca... you will need to take a cab there but well worth it. They have "serenaders". Some of it boisterous music all the way to Ava Maria. It was awesome!
You also have to go to Mauro's pizza and try the arugula pizza. It is the best!!! It is just up the street from the Fontana.
Have a fabulous time and feel free to PM if you would like.
