I have checked tripadvisor and found places to stay for Morro Bay and Santa Barbara. But, I am having problems finding a place in Monterey.

Starting with #1 and going down, several have just one king bed in each room. We need two (double or queen) beds.

I am surprised how many of the top rated places allow pets. We need a place that does not allow pets or smoking.

We'd like to be very close to the Aquarium as we will be going there, see Cannery Row and doing the 17 mile drive. We will have our car so parking is an issue too. It would be nice to be near the water but not a really noisy area.

There is a Holiday express inn on wave st one street over from cannery row. It is in walking distance to the aquarium. They also have the free breakfast. I found it was very quiet. I think the address is 443 wave st montery ca. Hope this helps you.

Best Western Victorian Inn is within walking distance to the aquarium/cannery row. We were just there a few weeks ago and loved it.

They allow pets so it won't work for us. Thanks.

btw, I see it's your first post - welcome to the dis!

This was one of my possible ones to research more. No smoking, no pets, rooms with two beds and free parking. Good start.

Other than people complaining about the split level stairs and rooms right next to the lobby/bkfst. area being noisy, it seemed to have good reviews.

What more can you tell me about it? It doesn't sound like it's right on the water? Do they have different views like courtyard or water view (in the distance)? Is there a side that is away from the street? Do they have Aquarium/room package specials that are cheaper than buying each individually?

Did it seem run down at all? Could you hear people in neighboring rooms?

How far of a walk to the Aquarium?

Thanks for any info!

No its not right on the water. I dont know about the views from the next view I was on the first floor. The room I had was huge.
The parking is under the hotel. I dont know if they have package deals. The walk to the aquarium maybe 10 minutes. It is near the two hotels near the end of the st. I didnt find it to be really noisy to me. somw people could have different views on that. I walked to cannery row and I was by myself. I felt safe. Me and my Dh go there all the time. Next door to the hotel is a building that looks like a barn, it is a two story antique store.

It is very clean and dont know if they allow pets or not. Staff was very helpful as well. Keep asking questions if you want to know more.

I checked it out more and it looks like it will be a good choice for us. I already knew it does not allow pets so that is why I kept it on my list.

thanks!

We stayed at the Intercontinental in Monterey - it was an amazing hotel. It came up on priceline - It was right on the water and about 3 minutes from the aquarium.

I was just going to say -- if you can get a decent price on the Intercontinental, the location is ideal. And it's a beautiful property. Congratulations on getting it on Priceline, splash5!

Problem is we need to book specific dates ahead of time. We would be taking a chance trying to play the priceline/expedia/etc game close to our trip. Plus, if we need no pets policy, and two beds it's a different game. My sister and I can't sleep sharing a bed. If it was a couple, you put two in the computer (priceline, etc.) and you might get a king bed or two doubles, whatever. If WE put 2 adults in, there is no provision to choose two beds. We could very easily end up with one bed.

I can't believe how expensive some of these places are though. Monterey is worse than a really nice place we found in Santa Barbara. I am wondering since we are basically there to see the Aquarium if it would be better to find a place nearby in Pacific Grove or somewhere and just drive to the Aquarium?

Just curious, where did you end up deciding to stay in Santa Barbara?

We decided to splurge on this trip. We won't do another big one for a long time.

I picked the #1 on tripadvisor - really great reviews (Inn of the Spanish Garden) because it is a small inn (around 32 rooms) is Spanish/Mediterranean style that fits Santa Barbara. Has a nice inner courtyard with foliage, spanish tiles, pool, balconies. Beautiful pictures and rooms. Free parking and nice little continental breakfast. In the heart of the city. No pets or smoking.

I've asked so many questions lately on the boards I can't keep track. Were you the one who recommended the Anderson Inn at Morro Bay? We booked that too. It sounds really great also. I got a brochure on Morro Bay yesterday and it sounds really beautiful and relaxing. I can't wait! We really need to decompress, soon.

I haven't booked DL or Monterey yet. DL will not be an issue. I doubt they are going to book up this soon for the first part of May. Monterey is stinking expensive for what you get (imho) but we want to see the Aquarium and have a little break on the drive back home.

I changed our dates around a few times but we are set now.

Yes, I recommended the Anderson Inn. I had seen the Inn of the Spanish Garden, it looked great too. I'm haven't completely set my dates yet, so I'm still looking at options, so keep me posted on where you decide in Monterey. I don't think we'll be staying there, but at this point, you never know!:goodvibes

We stayed here when we visited Monterey three years ago:

http://www.hojo.com/HowardJohnson/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=07910

It was quiet and in the middle of a Pacific Grove neighborhood surrounded by trees. We even saw a family of deer hanging around on the grounds as we took a five minute walk to Asilomar Beach. The inn looks like it was former condominium/townhome complex. It had free parking (our van was in a covered garage right under our room) and free hot breakfast each morning (kids loved making their own waffles each morning). The rooms were not luxurious and certainly doesn't have the amenities of a 4-5 star hotel, but our room was clean and had all the things we needed. We were very happy with our two room suite. :)

Good luck in your search and have a nice time!

Wow, this looks like a nice spot!

Not to highjack this thread (hope you don't mind Rhonna!) but with all of the stays around the DLR area you've had munchkins mom, where would you recommend for a first-timer, two days, in the DLR area? You've stayed at some of the options I was looking at, Paradise Pier, Fairfield, Sheraton... any recommendations?

I'll send you a PM so as not to bring an Off topic subject into this thread. :)

Well, I agonized over Monterey and almost gave up stopping there since the prices were so outrageous. Even more expensive than Santa Barbara - that blew me away. We were only going there for the Aquarium. And also starting our coastal highway drive from there down to SB.

I finally realized the price between weekdays and weekends was more than double! So I realized we could put Monterey at the beginning of our trip (it fits better then anyhow, rather than at the end) and that put us there during the week.

Then, I was torn between tripadvisor #1 Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa and #8 Holiday Inn Express. I ended up getting a really great deal on the Monterey Plaza partial ocean view room. Didn't want to end up in their bldg. across Cannery Row Street so paid a little more but didn't want to pay for full ocean view. It is still costing us more per night than Morro Bay or SB but we want a really nice trip. It's a really high end resort and has won awards so this will be a splurge. It's been over 4 years since we traveled and dealing with a lot of stressful things in that time frame. So, although I wasn't intentionally picking by the ratings alone, we ended up with the #1 tripadvisor hotels in Monterey, Morro Bay and SB. We are all booked now except I need to call the DLH tomorrow and book them. The hotels up and down I-5 on our travel days aren't as important.

I'm starting to get excited now, even though it's months away. I think we will really be able to relax and enjoy the places we chose.

Got an offer in the mail a couple of days ago for AAA membership at reduced cost and they add a second member for free. We signed up - first time ever. This will be a road trip so we may need them. Plus, we have already saved hundreds at these resorts by using AAA. It's already paid for itself and then some.

Mollie at Anderson Inn recommended a particular kayaking company that will take you out on guided tours and stop on the dunes with a picnic lunch. We aren't super healthy/strong so I wasn't sure we could handle it but she said she sent an 80 year old couple out (not fitness buffs) and they loved it. So maybe we will give it a try. You can choose single or double kayaks.

Now I'm collecting info. on restaurants.

A little bird not long ago informed me that Salinas is a good location for hotel accommodations; close to Monterey, not pricey, and very nice.

I hope that you have an awesome and wonderful trip. And please don't stress out over anything, just enjoy!
