Hong Kong no Phooey TR (Apr 2012)! The Yee's have it....TR finish #1101, 07/09

I really like your day by day accounts! :thumbsup2

It gives me an idea of what to expect when we see your TR, even if you deviate from the routine it's OK, but it gives me something to think about while you're gone and where you might be.

I just realized that you will get back just before Fran and I take another trip to Vegas, so I won't necessarily read the beginning of your TR from my computer. :headache: Or maybe I will, if our next trip to Vegas is anything like our last one. :rolleyes1

How long are you gone for?

Remember...I still need to get my pictures unpacked and then work out how to put them into some sort of spinning tale....

Well we leave on the 13th of April and come back on the 18th, so if you are gone 10 days, you'll be back on the 11th and will start to "unpack" your photos in the days while we are gone, and knowing you I would HOPE that you are posting them while we are gone! :rotfl2:

I would hope that I would have started before the 18th. :surfweb:

Day by Day Account - Day 7

Day 7 and Good Friday!

It is a public holiday in Hong Kong with the big businesses and government offices closed. However, general trading and shopping remains opened.

Depending on how we feel, we may either spend the day in the Tsim Sha Tsui/Kowloon area or head to Macau.

If we stay in Tsim Sha Tsui/Kowloon, I plan to hit the markets:
  • Apliu Street Flea Market
  • Jade Market (Yau Ma Tei)
  • Ladies Market (Mong Kok)
  • Bird Market (Mong Kok)
  • Flower Market (Mong Kok)
  • Goldfish Market (Mong Kok)
  • Temple Street Night Market (Yau Ma Tei)

If this is what we do, it might be a good day to head towards the cheapest Michelin star restaurant in the world, Tim Ho Wan (located in Mong Kok)....providing we get there early and avoid the crazy queues.

If we head to Macau, then I'll be on the historic building trail as well as seeking Portuguese Egg Tarts! I also suspect that there will be no avoiding the casino's.
Oh well, maybe I'll get a Gondola Ride down the Grand Canal at the Venetian whilst I'm eating an egg tart.

It would be funny iffe your day by day accounts run just like you report. But as life would have it, that wont happen. Your own pictures may throw you into a tail spin. It will be interesting to see how many pictures you end up taking.

You think you will take an extra piece of luggage for all the goodies you bring home. I know I asked, but I think you missed it, how long is your flight over there? Your two weeks will fly by:thumbsup2

Same answer as before....10 hours :faint:.

I don't know how much I may or may not be buying in Hong Kong. DH and I were talking about it we'll just have to see if the shopping is value and quality for money. And I'll have to review the bag situation in a couple of weeks when I start thinking about packing.

Wow, you'll be on your way soon. I loved the Moomba and fireworks pictures.

Day by Day Account - Day 8

Day 8 and Saturday before Easter!

I think this is a public holiday in Hong Kong with the big businesses and government offices are closed. As was the case for Easter, general trading and shopping remains opened.

Today's itinerary might be pretty simple to explain. Whichever option we didn't do the day before (either Tsim Sha Tsui/Kowloon area or Macau), we will do today.

Just to recap - if we do Tsim Sha Tsui/Kowloon, it'll be the markets. If we head to Macau, it'll be a Gondola Ride down the Grand Canal at the Venetian whilst I'm eating an egg tart.

Day 9 and Easter Sunday!

I suspect my parents will want to do something in the morning on Easter Sunday and it will have to do with one of those two subjects that we shouldn't mention on the Dis.

So, I'm keeping this day pretty free and easy.

What I'd like to do is head across to the Golden Bauhinia Square or Expo Promenade in Wan Chai and catch a flag raising ceremony. This is the site where Hong Kong was officially handed back to the People's Republic of China in 1997.

I'm also hoping that despite the expected busy crowd, that today is the day we head towards the Ritz-Carlton to experience the Chocolate high tea in the Chocolate Library (103rd Floor). I have read that the high tea might be booked out till August and that there might be walk-up space. So when I'm there, sometime in the last 4 or 5 days, I'm hoping to have made it past the Ritz-Carlton and made some enquiries about the doability of a high tea.

Failing that, I'm happy to head towards the InterContinental or the Mandarin Oriental.

This sounds so wonderful...

Sounds like some fun days you have planned. Seeing the Pandas is cool. They are so beautiful. Shopping, shopping and more shopping followed by eating at a cheap world renowned restauarant sounds like an awesome day. I am trying to plan Easter Sunday here myself. How awesome would it be to be planning it there! I know you will have fun.

I only hope that the food lives up to the expectation. (And that I make it there! :thumbsup2)

Day 10 and Easter Monday!

If the weather is fine, we will probably head towards Hong Kong Wetland Park in the New Territories.

The Wetland park contains protected wetlands and has a variety of plants, animals and water birds. My dad and I love looking at birds; and I'm particularly interested in native flora and natural ecosystems.

The park includes a visitor centre, complete with hands-on exhibitions and galleries.

So, it sounds like a place that might provide entertainment for 3 generations.

In the afternoon, we might head to the Walled City Park in Kowloon and then meander through the night market afterwards. :goodvibes

Three generations of entertainment for any place is pretty wonderful, I know this place will provide a backdrop for great pictures.

Sounds like a great plan! You are getting so close now! You will have a wonderful time! We'll miss you while you're gone, but look forward to some great entertainment once you get back!

Day by Day Account - Day 6

Day 6 and I'm hoping that we'll make it to Ocean Park today. It is located at the Aberdeen/Repulse Bay side of Hong Kong Island and seems reasonably easy to get to via MTR.

Entry fee for an adult is HK$280, which roughly equates to about $40. Entry fee for kids is HK$140 (about $20).

The main reason for visiting Ocean Park will be to see Panda bears. Any of the other shows (birds, marine mammals etc) will be a bonus.

I figure this will be a pretty full day, so we'll probably head back to the hotel and if we haven't already eaten, we can eat at the food court in the Metropolis Mall.

I'll be interested to hear the review of this. :thumbsup2

2 weeks countdown - Let the Shopping begin!

Hey, Hey! It's another Saturday and that means that there is now 2 weeks to go.

I have 2 weeks to go.

:dance3: :dance3:

2 WEEKS!! :scared1:

I'm starting to do the shopping for the toiletries and travel items that we need to take with us. Just bits and pieces at a time; but highest on my list?

Hand sanitizer!

Just in case.

Be prepared to have your forehead scanned by a machine like a barcode scanner for your temperature :rotfl2:

Am I the only person to notice you wrote this a day after you said

I have 2 weeks to go.

ummm....
You're thinking about packing on the flight over :rotfl2: :rolleyes1

As a big footed tall girl with a chest I didn't find much to buy in the 'good value' department. But you might be the right proportions given your asian heritage.

It's hard to know.

Have fun contemplating :upsidedow

OOp's sorry, didnt notice you mentioned a 10 hr flight. I would be white knuckling all the way. You always find good food. I dont think you will find to much disapppointment.

I am so excited for you to start , so we all can read about it. :thumbsup2

Been a little time challenged lately.

As for finding stuff....I'm the right height but I think I'll be "horizontally challenged" to find clothes that fit. :headache:

I might check out tailor-made if I have time.

The anticipation is one of the best parts of any trip for me. :goodvibes

Day by Day Account - Day 11

Day 11!

I don't have anything planned today...I kinda figure we might leave a day of nothing planned just in case we didn't hit all the things we wanted to hit so that we can catch up.

About the only thing that I have plans for today is dinner.

One of my first cousins is flying into Hong Kong around noon today with her family. We're going to catch up with her for dinner. She's staying in the Causeway Bay area...so if nothing else, we'll head on that way. If we haven't already found a place for dinner before today, I'll be going there to check out potential dinner restaurants.

I'm really looking forward to catching up with this cousin. :goodvibes
