My fiance and I are going to spend our honeymoon in WDW. We were hoping to book a room at the BWI or YC but with the way the prices are now we just can't afford that. I've started looking into possibly buying DVC points from someone and going that route. What do you guys think about this, good idea, bad idea? I'd love any suggestions you have to offer! I'm really new to this so I really don't know much at all about the points.

Thanks so much for your help!

sounds like a smart idea to save some costs on the honeymoon!

My DW and I rented points for the trip where we got engaged and bought into DVC that trip. Our next trip (first trip HOME) was our honeymoon using our points.

I know we saved a lot on the rental of the points as I got them lower than the $10 going rate. I think it ended up being less than $60 a night for the OKW studio.

Sounds like a good idea to me! Points Sunday through Thursday are the lowest. The weekends usually cost almost double in points. So if you were really trying to go economical, five days Sunday through Thursday would save some money. Looks like the going rate is about $10.00 a point on the rent/trade board.

We gave our daughter and son-in-law points for their honeymoon to stay at the Beach Club Villas. They stayed in a studio and stayed Sunday through Thursday in May (it was 65 points). They were treated great at the BCV. Be sure to let the check-in desk know you're on your honeymoon. Sometimes Disney sends up something special for a honeymoon couple. Not always, but sometimes.

Congratulations and happy planning! Have you checked out the DIS discussion forum on weddings?

Best Wishes.

oh thanks littlestar, for reminding me I forgot to say they should definately mention it is thier honeymoon.

DW and I got a small bottle of champagne and card sent up to us shortly after getting to our room at VWL.

For a honey moon, you may want to consider the luxury of a one-bedroom with the jacuzzi. I might also suggest BWV, BCV or WLV for the atmosphere of each of them. OKW would have a boatride to DTD which would be nice for pleasure island. BWV and BCV have Jellyrolls and tons of restaraunts nearby. All of them have bus transportation everywhere. With the studio, you'll have the advantage of a fridge for drinks and snacks. If I had to choose for a honeymoon (since we had our honeymoon at the Grand Floridian) I would pick BCV, it's my personal preference and the nicest DVC resort especially if you were already looking at the YC. Others may have thier own suggestions to share with you. Renting points from a mamber si a great way to go and the point charts listed on the links above can help you plan how many you will need during the time of year you are going, the rent/trade board can help you make the connection. Make sure to wear those cute honeymooner's mouse ears, you'll find yourself getting all kinds of perks.

I just wanted to say, I couldn't tell from your post if you were thinking of renting the points to stay at BWI or YC that would not be a very good idea, the points to stay outside of the DVC resorts are too high. Now, if your thinking of renting the points to stay at BWV or BCV that would be a great idea. If you could swing enough for the 1 bedroom, that would be an amazing honeymoon since I assume you might want to spend a bit of time in your room ;) . There is a jacuzzi tub in there you know!

I totally agree, but beware! Once you stay in a DVC one-bedroom, you'll never want to go back. We could only afford 150 points when we bought in to OKW and always assumed that would be enough for our two weeks, off-season in a studio. Had a one night stay during a trip to Orlando for a family event and ended up in a one-bedroom at VWL because that's all we could get last minute. Now Disney just isn't the same without my relaxing bath every morning (and sometimes at night, too!).

While I'd definitely look into point rentals, depending on when your honeymoon is I'd also keep your eyes peeled for discount codes and package discounts at mousesavers.com. Not sure when you are honeymooning, but these codes usually come out in the fall for next year.

Whatever you decide, I hope your honeymoon is very magical!

Thank you so much for all of the comments and suggestions. We were thinking of renting points for either the BWV or the BCV, so now that I know more about it they both sound good. I agree that a one bedroom would be nice, I did see the large bathroom in some of the pictures! It would also be nice to be able to keep snacks/drinks in the fridge.

We are going to be there from April 27th - May 5th, and we were going to buy annual passes. I think I will wait a little longer to see if possibly some discounts come out, but if not I think I will definitely go the DVC route!

Thanks again for all your great suggestions!

You have a nice size bar fridge in the studio, with a microwave and bar sink. It has a queen size bed and a pull out couch. It's really a nice configuration for 2 people. Don't let us go overboard with the onebedroom idea. There's hot tubs at all the resort pools. We acutally bought a small blender on our honeymoon and were whipping up all kinds of fun drinks. Enjoy.

Don't wait too long. DVC books up and right now you are eight months out or so. If you get within the 60-90 day timeframe, it is possible that there will not be much availablity - particularly if you have your heart set on a certain DVC resort. At seven months out, DVC members who want to stay at a resort other than their home start booking (or trading around their existing reservations).

Also be aware of DVC's (and whomever you rent from's) cancellation policies. It isn't as easy with DVC to cancel. Hopefully, you won't need to cancel a honeymoon trip, but you never know.
