*** Homeschool List ***

For anyone interested:

This Thursday, 8pm on HBO- "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" will have a segment on a controversy over whether homeschooled children should be allowed to join public school athletic teams.

Please send Pixie Dust my way....

Lightning struck around our home somewhere, or possibly hit our house? - our phones don't work and our computer is fried (using my DH's laptop w/ wireless internet). Our well pump also seems to be not working and our house alarm shows that it has no power, even though our power is back on. Earlier today the water holding tank for our well ran dry, and we thought that was bad - you don't realize how much we take water for granted until you don't have any. Anyway, this lightning strike is MUCH worse than running out of water.

Potentially good news on the computer - it's only a few months old and I had bought the on-site warranty - they will be here Tuesday to try to fix it. Sounds like it might "just" be the power supply. Hope so.

Just wanted to share my concern with my HS Dis buddies.

Ugh Nuzmom! I hope things are better today! If not...will your homeowner's policy handle the repairs?

I have a funny story. We are heading to Disney in a few weeks and we've heard so many people talking about having a DVD player in the car...they say it's a godsend. My DH bought one and we hooked it up this week to make sure we knew how to work it. My DH ordered a DVD from Netflix...an old Schoolhouse Rock one. My son has been singing along with it whenever we're in the car (and it makes me smile to hear the old familiar songs.)
This morning while my son was getting dressed he asked me to sing the "Mr. Morton" song with him. I really didn't remember much of it, but it's a song about subjects and predicates. ("Mr. Morton is the subject of the sentence and wht the prediacte says he does.") After singing I said "Ethan sings. Ethan is the subject and the predicate is?" "SINGS!" We then had to go through every member of the family and he would tell me the subject and predicate! I had to laugh...my lil guy couldn't care less about learning his letters, but he wants to know about subjects and predicates! Lil sponge! :rotfl:

We LOVE Schoolhouse Rocks! I used it for an entire school day last spring when we were all sick with colds/sore throats!

Nuzmom, I hope you get things back in order so you can relax on your upcoming trip. Still hoping to run into you there. ;)

That was a funny schoolhouse rock story. It's fun to watch their videos with my kids. I remember singing along to them when I was a child. :goodvibes

I want to thank everyone for all the well-wishing and prayers, it must be working. The well pumps seem ok, water is slowly coming back - we will probably breakdown and order water tomorrow (we have a underground storage tank that can be filled :) ) Phone guy just left, replaced the dsl (free) and only one phone is bad. There was some sort of problem at the phone box by the road, too, but he fixed it. Our house alarm still has an "issue", but my DH thinks it's the transformer - I think that's a minor thing?

Anyway, we're extrememly blessed. We think the lightning struck the flew pipe in our chimney. It's blacker than it was and the bricks around it are too. Sooner or later we'll need to get up there and look at it, but it's something like 22 feet in the air and our roof is steep. Right now, it's a low priority. The "phone guy" was telling me about the house he just came from - lightning struck it and put a hole right down through the house. Also, another family we know had there house catch fire during the last storm from a lightning strike. As I said, I am so thankful that our damage is minimal.

Lora - we're still going to try to look you up. I was very excited to hear that we may be able to go to Storm Along Bay if Keister Coaster slide is closed. That sounds like fun.

Hi all! Just wanted to encourage you who are scared you might mess up your kids' education by teaching them yourself-- you won't! I started homeschooling my oldest when he was in K. He now is in college majoring in Physics and Engineering - with a scholarship. Oldest daughter is a senior and has great SAT scores and has heard from about 55 colleges wanting her to choose their school. I currently teach kids in 12,9,7,4, & 1 grade + I have a 3 yr old. I am NOT a super-woman. I enjoy my kids. I have a messy house! I love homeschooling! The main mistake I see people make is trying to run a public school in their own home! It's YOUR home and YOUR family and it's important to tailor your school to fit your lifestyle. And it's important to enjoy your kids and not get all stressed out over whether they're 'keeping up'! The first years were tough but I'm soooo glad I stuck with it!

I agree! I am also a 13 year veteran and have had similar success with my children. I would add that, for us, the key to a successful academic environment was to STAY HOME during the day. The folks I have seen get into trouble are those who constantly break routine and have outings during the school day. Just an orthodontic appointment during the school day causes problems. If anyone has ever read the writings of Mrs. Swan (first name?) who educated 10 successful kids at home--she would not even take any kind of appointment during the school day. We also stayed out of co-ops (which many people love, I know). We do most of our socializing at night and on weekends. As you can see from my signature we are very active in scouting and that is something that actually has a ton of weight when it comes to getting into college. We have been involved in a P.E. class that meets once a week for years. The kids know that if school is not done by 3:00 on P.E. day--they don't go. (They always go. ;) )

Thank you for the words of encouragement's. As I'm getting our work organized, I keep feeling overwhelmed. This will be the first year of HS for us, and I'm getting more scared, as I see commercials, and our area getting ready for Ps. My son is going into the 7th grade, and as the more series, and important years are approaching, I keep getting this doubts like okay, are going to succeed?!
I have had to keep bringing this back to the Lord, for His guidance and strength.

Please excuse my lack of info, but fill me in on this controversy. Wow! I knew some towns/states were different. Evidently this is a big question in other places. Our homeschoolers here in Hillsborough, NH can take advantage of any courses or activities that are offered. As we were told by our wonderful high school guidance counselor, "You're paying taxes for schooling, yr son is entitled to every course, activity & service our system offers". I am sad that, apparently, this is not the case everywhere.
Please, what is the opposition to homeschooler's participation?

Thanks in advance!

Actually, I don't know much about the controversy myself. My DS's do not wish to play organized sports, so it is not an issue for us. I saw the listing about the HBO show in my TV guide and thought I'd post it here for those homeschoolers who might be interested in watching it. Maybe someone else here can give you more info.

We're just starting homeschooling this year, my 5 yo DS will be doing an online charter school. Our local district does not currently allow homeschoolers to participate in any school activities. Their argument is that if they let homeschoolers participate in extracurricular activities, next the homeschooling families will push to be able to pick and choose academic courses they also want to join.

From what I understand, however, our state legislature is in the process of passing a bill that all districts will have to allow homeschoolers to participate in extracurriculars,

Our little man is only 10 months old, but we decided before even having him that we were going to home school. I love this thread, it gave me LOTS of information about home schooling as well as WDW. We're taking him on his first (of hopefully many) WDW trip in 33 days. Really interested in getting involved with other parents who share these interests. Thanks to EVERYONE for all the great info.

We decided before the birth of DS #1 too. Now "our little man" is not so little.......he's 16! Time goes by much too quickly!!

It's nice having him home now that he's a teen (in every sense  ) Because we are together all day, our lines of communication are better than ever!

Any other Mainers here?[/QUOTE]

Hi, I have been off for a few weeks. I am a Mainer. Where are you, I am in Raymond.

Tammy

We need more!!!

Quick, post in other places!

LOL!

School is going well for us :)

DD5 might need glasses--she flunked the little eye chart in the doctor's office. So that's on our calendar.
