Just lost a ROFR and it got me thinking. I wanted vwl so I could make the 11mo adv res. I went ahead and made a cash res to hold until I replace with pts. Other than that benefit of early booking what else is the advantage. Why not go cheap w/ OKW and cash res every year then replace w/ pts. within the 7mo window. Some might look @ the cash res's to hold as "improper". Sorry if I am willing to give wdw $ 450 to hold for four mos and get it back. there is a cost for this service. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are. You can't book a cash room and then convert it to points at seven months unless you just get lucky. Cash rooms at DVC resorts and points ressies come out of completely different inventories. For you to switch, there would have to be availability in the points inventory. Depending on the time of the year, you might very well find "no room at the Inn" at seven months.

Here's an old thread which starts off with a discussion of "home resort advantage." Read and heed the disclaimers, due to the age of the thread, but the basic info in the thread is sound. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=778634

A cash reservation will not hold a DVC room each DVC resort has rooms they rent for cash and rooms they rent on points and they do not over lap
Also there is VWL and WL which are seperate resorts although attached by a path and share the buses poll etc......

If you want VWL consistently the price difference is not enough to complicate your life hoping for the 7 month window. Plus the VWL contract will be worth more later than the OKW, at least until late in the contract term.
