Hollywood Studios Hat Removal

Which seems to say that its probably going to a landfill rather than being put in storage for some other use.

Yes.

- Disney just does not remove important items and then rebuild them elsewhere on Disney property. Are they sentimental? Yes. They saved some 20,000 Leagues water and added it to Under the Sea water upon opening. In Winnie the Pooh is a picture of Mr. Toad handing the deed to Owl. They did save the Snow White characters to use on new ride but that made perfect sense and they are not large prominent props. But to remove something this large and then put it back up elsewhere on property - no, makes no sense.

- The permit to take out the hat has one description "Demolition". Disney does not use this term lightly. It does not say dismantle or removal, it says demolition.

- It was not in great shape which is no surprise since it was not supposed to be up this long. Lots of rust spots bubbling up under the paint all over it, especially the back side by the theater. It was going to need major restorative work.

- It was built in horizontal sections, stacked and bolted together. They are removing by working in these approximate sections but they are not upbolting it (to preserve) but are cutting it. The cuts are not on the seams, they are uneven, working as fast as possible for removal. At some of the gold adornments they are even cutting around the shapes.

Not only are they cutting it horizontally they are cutting it up vertically within each section into smaller pieces. If they were preserving it they would not do the vertical cuts. It anything it seems these vertical cuts creating smaller chunks is to insure it is demolished and not usable before it ever leaves the park.

All the cuts are uneven and jagged and done without care. The edges show bending of the metal (can opener effect), essentially making it impossible to put it back together.

If there were any chance of the Hat reappearing it would have to be a whole new hat, probably smaller and redesigned like the one in CA. But at this point I see no where it would fit except on top of the Animation Building.

Picture is from last Friday and current pics show even more jagged cuts to it.

well Disney may save things I highly doubt they actually saved water from 20,00 leagues. When it was originally filled in they had no plans to build anything there. The water "saved from 20,00 leagues" was probably only tap water just like when they brought "water from the great rivers and seas, etc." from around the world for the 25th of Epcot when they predicted the fountain of nations. I know they said that the water from those locations but in reality you can't really import water from those countries or for them to have saved water for that long it would have evaporated or gone really stagnant and nasty like pond water.

I hate to see it be completely removed from the property, it's really lovely when it's lit up. The top of the Animation Building would have been a good location for it.

:( sad to see it go... any idea what will be put in its place?

Nothing hopefully. It's been an eyesore from the beginning and now with it being removed it should go back to the way MGM/DHS originally looked with a perfect view of Chinese theater replica.

Why didn't they do it this way? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEKcFAfipGs

As to what is going in its place: nothing. They said that the blocking of the theater took away from the story that the park was trying to tell. They want the theater to be visible from the moment you enter the park. Now, I'm betting the Christmas tree will go back there during the season, but nothing is going in there permanently right now.

Yay! Things seem to be progressing very well. We'll be there in a month. Hopefully everything will be gone by then!

Wish it would go a little faster... I'll be there Tuesday and was hoping to either see it all the way up or all the way down! LOL!
