I think I might have found one on the family boards! Maybe you should have posted this in all the forums.

I did notice some stealthy set up going on over there.

BTW, we can't swing McDonald's this week, but we are planning to make sandwiches and eat in the McDonald's parking lot. Anyone have any ideas on how we can possibly keep our chin up?

This may be helpful to some of the newer posters:

Each year as the holiday's approach the number of posts increase with people who have heart-breaking stories of not having money for food, gifts, clothes, etc.
First I want to thank everyone who posted and is keeping this thread alive. I know that the people who have been on the boards for a while would understand.

You will find in the next few months posters who will start to make "remarks" about another poster. It may come off to you as being - well MEAN. BUT, and this is really important, that poster who said something, is trying to help you without coming right out and saying what is happening. You really can't just come out and blast a poster. You would get points and or banned. And the people who work these scams know this.

Well I'm not exactly new to the DISboards and usually lurk once in a while on the budget board but rarely post here. You guys are a wealth of info and advice :goodvibes However, this thread gave me pause. I am totally the type of person to get sucked up in a sob story and offer help. It never would have occured to me that a long term DISer would scam or fall into the category of shall we say, "needing perpetutal help" :rolleyes1 So, thank you to opening my eyes and I am sure many others to that possiblility.

Having read the various threads now if I had seen the "mean" remarks out of context of what I now realize, I would certainly just have thought, WOW how rude, unkind etc. while sympathizing with someone's plight :sad2:

I am quite sure most of the people commenting on this thread in agreement know the posters to watch out for. ;)

The closer it gets to the holidays, the sob stories will begin and people will hint that their holiday is going to be miserable without a specific item (hypothetically let's just say a Honey Baked Ham or the latest American Girl doll). People that have been around these boards will make comments about the begging and others will come in and "defend" this poor soul who posted their sob story and will start sending the poster money, gift cards, gifts, etc...

Happens every year like clockwork.

Well thanks to some ironic pots and kettles and searching user thread starters and what not ... you can call me officially stunned  Talk about perpetual bad luck. In the immortal words of Ursula, "Poor unfortunate soul." :sad2:

I must say the Yay me thread was hilarious!

I was listening to a local radio station that does an annual turkey drop and they were saying how they are far behind their goal for this year's Thanksgiving baskets. One thing that really hit hard was a comment that "We didn't always have a lot, but Mom always put a turkey on the table.". Then the announcer went on to say that it didn't matter where the turkey came from, the childhood memories were there.

So if you're fortunate enough to have a few extra dollars this holiday season, please remember those less fortunate and make a donation to your local food bank or turkey drop. Do it instead of sending a ham to a faceless username on the disboards. You'll still be helping to make a memory for a child somewhere close to home.

I used to go through this with my mom. She was very religious, and honestly believed that nobody could be religious and be a scammer. Mostly, she was right. Even when we had very little growing up, she would always donate to our church's "needy family" basket--even though sometimes, she would then receive the basket! It just wouldn't occur to her that people would scam. But, there are people who will use anything, and find people with generous spirits who are as naive as my mom was.

And I second what a PP said--if possible, give local. I'm sure there are people and organizations right in your town who can help those in need. usually, churches can be a good choice, despite what I said earlier. But there are also local food banks, giving trees, even government services. Our Girl Scout troop for years exchanged handmade gifts--the girls made a second, identical gift, that went to a girl their age in the county. Nobody knew who she was, just that she didn't have much.

Man, I am never listening to you guys again... I had a few minutes to kill so I went ahead and started skimming the "Yay Me" thread and now there's coffee all over my keyboard. Thanks ever so much. *wipe wipe* :lmao:

Wowza.

ETA - But there was no resolution! The thread was just closed... ah well, I'll use my imagination... lol

Just bumping this back to the front page. :)

I'm do for a little bump action. The doctor today said I needed to increase my exercise. So I am bumping once with my left hip and once with my right.

Hope everyone is getting their lists and checking them twice - I meant grocery lists for Thanksgiving Dinners! I don't like to rush Christmas!:lmao::lmao:

When you are done with your hips, you can move to the arms. Lifting the thread is also good exercise.

Things seem interestingly quiet this week.

Yes - please keep bumping this up - and dropping the hints so we can check these posters out.. I almost fell for another one within the past few days..:sad2:

Bugs the heck out of me that I can't take people at face value here.. Would I have sent money or something? Probably not - didn't sound all that desparate to me - but I did find myself feeling sorry for the poster..:headache:

I'll bet money they are waiting for people to get busy and forget to bump this up.

I think there are enough people on this thread that at least one person a day can keep it bumped. I almost want to take bets to see how many more days they are going to hold out before they make that frantic post. 1 week to Thanksgiving.

I'm keeping Thanksgiving economical this year since the family is split geographically and there are only 2 of us. I'm doing a stuffed roaster chicken. We always debone the turkey before serving it anyway, so it will be hard to tell the difference. I cook this meal often throughout the year. Yummm. Less mess, less leftovers that usually end up lost in the bottom of the freezer.

I'm guessing the hardest hits will be next week - for the Black Friday sales.. I remember someone last year saying how they were going to have a terribly meager Christmas - the "meal" was going to be the gift (that was the first sentence or so in the thread) - but starting the thread wanting others to tell her all about the great buys everyone else got..:confused3 That one I did find extremely odd.. Why would you torture yourself like that?

When my kids were little and times were tough (married to my 1st DH - who blew his paycheck on booze & gambling before he even got home), I did NOT want to hear about "great deals" that others got - nor would I step foot in a store.. (No internet way back then..):headache:

That was a really strange thread..:sad2:
