Hilton Head DVC trip report ( part 1)

Vernon - just wanted to take a moment and tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed reading your trip report! I bet our paths crossed a time or two at the resort and we didn't even know it. Could you tell me where the Old Oyster Factory is located? I'd like to keep it in mind for our trip in November or December (can't decide yet). Also, DH is interested in flying this time around. Is there a reason you flew into Charlotte instead of Savannah? I think I read somewhere on the board that Savannah is about 45 minutes from HH and that might be an option for us. Also was renting a car a pain? Thanks for answering my questions and again, I enjoyed your report!

Hi Lisa,
The Old Oyster Factory is almost exactly opposite the resort if you look out the back of the resort across the water. To drive you need to drive onto the 278 and turn left. About a mile/mile and a half you come to an intersection with traffic lights. Turn left into Mathews Drive. The road for the Oyster factory is the third left off Mathews Drive( Mathews is also a short cut through to the supermarkets and Factory Outlet stores) . I can't remember the name of the road it is in but as Wathews bends round to the right, you take a left off the crown of the bend.

I flew into Charlotte because USAirways fly direct into Charlotte. There is no one the flys direct to Savannah from the UK. If I had taken a connecting flight I would have used HH airport itself ( as Graeme did ) . Certainly Savannah would be a better choice than Charlotte in any other circumstances. I did drop my rental car at Savannah airport and it's an EASY drive, although I was a little upset it cost me $95 to drop the car there instead of at Charlotte. :( . It seems Savannah is a pretty quiet airport and it was easy to find the airport, parking and rental desks for the carhire.

Thanks Vernon for the terrific report. We'll be making our first trip to HH in June and can't wait. How far in advance did you have to reserve for Chef Gordon's "A Private Affair"? We will be at HH on our 32nd wedding anniversary and I thought this his dinner might be the perfect anniversary dinner. Did you call the resort directly or reserve the night through DVC or the internet?

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly! I think I know where Mathews Drive is (my son is named Matthew so that street name stuck in my mind).

If we fly it will definitely be into Savannah but to be honest, I enjoyed the drive. It's only 12 hours from Cleveland and the countryside was really pretty. Just outside South Carolina we ran into the most beautiful rainbow! I told hubby we never would have seen something so lovely from the air. Anyway, your info is appreciated. Hope to see you at HH next time!

P.S. Do you know if Chef Gordon is "flexible" with his menus? I'm tentatively planning to be at HH for our 9th wedding anniversary but we are not big alcohol drinkers and hubby likes very basic foods. Thanks again!

Lisa

I emailed Chef Gordon as calling from the UK is expensive and difficult to match the times up. I would DEFINATELY call soon try and sort out a date. You can call the resort to get his voicemail or email addy

Yes he is flexible with his menu. It's worth saying you're not big drinkers he may work something out, either by spending more on the food, although it would be tough to improve the quality of what we had or maybe by supplying a really GOOD bottle of wine if you would prefer that, IMHO your best bet is to email him, explain the situation and see what he has to say.
