Nope - I have no problem with black pride. Honestly - is that what you think that man was preaching? (FYI - I went to youtube and watched everything that was posted - and while some of it could be viewed as black pride - the majority of it was white bashing. That is what I find unacceptable.)

:thumbsup2

True. This has to do with the fact that Obama claims that this is the man who is his "moral compass" This is the man whose views Obama respects. I am not so upset that Obama went to his church. I can understand that. There are many reasons for going to church that may have nothing to do with the pastor. BUT (and this is a huge BUT) when you admittedly admire the man who has such racist views, it raises huge questions about your own views on the subject.

This is the same as if I admired and used Jerry Falwell as my spiritual inspiration & "moral compass"

For Cripes Sake! This has nothing to do with religion!!!

This is not an argument about what this man said about the Gospel, or Jesus or even about any other religion. The topic he is ranting about is entirely secular but just happens to take place in the church. Which is entirely inappropriate - no matter what religion you are.

This is a huge problem for Obama - not because he attends the church - but because he has elevated this preacher to a position of influence over his life and decisions outside of the church. 20 years is a very long time to simply shake your head and benignly disagree with such a divisive message.

Seriously - is there anything that Obama can do that his supporters would not defend? If I had found out that Hillary had attended a church that preached white power from the pulpit - I would drop my support of her like a hot potato even if she just sat through one sermon - let alone 20 years of it.

As a rich white person I can sit back and view it as "white bashing" if I wanted to. However, I lived less than a mile from where Trinity church is right now on the south side of Chicago and I have to say that there is truth in what he says. And yes, I saw the cherry picked videos.

ETA: I do think that religion should have nothing to do with politics, but that ain't gonna happen.

Of course there is some truth to what he says, BUT there is a pack of crap along with it!

Racism of white people, will not solve the racism of black people in this country!

WE (americans) KNOW Hillary for at least 17 years, we are familiar with her "moral compess"!
No one really knows Obama (despite what you believe). Obama himself brought his Pastor into this campaign.

Not for nuttin Fitz, but if you dont believe why Religion is so important to a candidate, why do believe it is important for us to know your religious views (hense the logo in your siggy)?

RELIGION is a issue in any campaign. Remember 19 very religious men hijack plane & killed many people on 9/11, all in the name of GOD!!!! Would you ignore their religion if one of them was running for president too?

I'm not now, nor will I ever run for elected office, so I don't understand why my signature sign is an issue. I put the Religious Left sign there because I liked it-just like everyone else puts things in their signatures that they like.

My important issues for this campaign are ending the war in Iraq, helping the middle class and the poor survive GW's recession, getting healthcare reform and having a candidate that has actually read and understands the Constitution. Since I am convinced that either candidate will do a much better job at ALL of the above than GW McCain, as I have said about a MILLION times-I will happily pull the lever for either.

I don't care what religion they are as long as they uphold the First Amendment. A radical fundamentalist of any faith would probably have an issue with upholding the First Amendment.

I totally agree with this, but I'm missing where the guy is saying that blacks are better than whites.

As to implying that the US invited 9/11, didn't Pat Robertson say the same thing?

Are you saying that you wouldn't vote for someone who was Muslim or are you just playing the 911 card?

I agree with you 100%, but as I said before, this has nothing whatsoever to do with religion.

And isn't Pat Robertson a flake? If Obama said he admired Pat, would you be upset?

I'm think all this holding people accountable for what other people said is getting ridiculous. I thought the Ferrro-gate thing was silly.

Very well said :thumbsup2
I can't believe people are OK with that. I don't bash blacks, browns, yellows or reds and I expect the same respect and do not bash my race, white.

Obama's pastor makes me sick, very sick to my stomach. Sorry if this is a man Obama admires he will NOT get my vote in the fall. I would hold my nose and vote for McCain before I vote for a man that admires such a racist pig! IMO YES that pastor speaks racism, if any white pastor was preaching "white pride" or "be proud you are white" the way this guy was, people would want his head!

In a recent interview:

Q: I don't know if you've seen it, but it's all over the wire today (from an ABC News story), a statement that your pastor (the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side) made in a sermon in 2003 that instead of singing "God Bless America," black people should sing a song essentially saying "God Damn America."

A: I haven't seen the line. This is a pastor who is on the brink of retirement who in the past has made some controversial statements. I profoundly disagree with some of these statements.

Q: What about this particular statement?

A: Obviously, I disagree with that. Here is what happens when you just cherry-pick statements from a guy who had a 40-year career as a pastor. There are times when people say things that are just wrong. But I think it's important to judge me on what I've said in the past and what I believe.

True, you cannot hold Obama responsible for what this loony-toon says.

I am just somewhat confused that this is the man Obama picked as his "moral compass"

In a recent interview:

Wait a minute....hasn't Obama said that he admires this guy and what he stands for?

hmm...why isn't your quote quoting? I am referring to your Obama quote not to you specificallyNewJersey

We all admire people who do or say things that we disagree with sometimes. Did Obama say he admires everything he says or stands for?

Exactly. Obama has said he disagrees with them and I think it's pretty clear Obama is anything but racist.

All we know of what this man has said are the hateful things. Nobody has released any video of anything else-because there would be no story in that. If in a 40 year career, he gave 2 sermons that were angry and bitter-that's what we're going to see. Nobody is going to release video of nice stuff, it doesn't generate web hits.

I would really like to hear from others that attend this church and have heard this man speak. Not necessarily the Senator, but anyone who knows more about him than the sound bytes we're getting.
