High School- Scholarships

DD got her first Scholarship. Its $300 so that will go to her remaining balance of her 1st semester balance so now she only has to pay $490. I tell her to put in for any scholarships any amount helps :) Hopefully she will get some more so she wont need to take out the full amount loan of $5500

At my DD's college, outside scholarships are applied to the loan first. Any scholarships over the $5500 (Freshman) federal loan amount are THEN applied to any outstanding balance owed. They also may take away any work study prior to applying toward the balance. You may still owe the full amount. Check the Financial Aid award and/or the school website. Checks written out to the student and the school will need to be reported.

DD got two letters saying she got two scholarships total of $1800 whoohoo! She has senior awards next week and she got an invite . She doesn't think she will get anything and thinks the invite is only for her being in CSF- so she said she will get a sash or cords. I'm hoping she will get another scholarship to cover half of her tuition so atleast instead of two loans she will only need to take out one. Good luck to all

Yes, they did offer a 6/5/4 month payment plan for an extra $75 a semester. So $600 extra. We opted to just make the payments all at once. Hear me out to the end - we got the Citi Double Cash Back credit card which pays you 1% when you spend and 1% when you pay, so 2% on all purchases. We have at the moment about 80% of what we need to pay DD's 4 years of school. We will use the credit card for the semester payments, pay off the balance when they come in and in essence, get approximately $2000 cash back by the time we are done. (We made our own discount!) We may make DD get a loan for her final semester just to give her some of the responsibility, but we will see where we are 3 1/2 years from now.

Nice that you can pay with credit card. I would use mine to earn cash rewards but DD's school charges 2.5% if card is used. At the end of this month I will have saved up 4 months of housing and 3 months of meal plan. luckily this school has monthly payment plan the other school she was thinking about I would have to pay by quarter

We would have loved to pay for DD's college with a reward CC but her school also charges a fee that would have more than wiped out the rewards so we don't.

It was our initial plan at this time in 2014 and we thought we would be raking in the reward points and then midsummer the University announced that they would begin adding the fee to CC payments.

As to the original question, my DD's largest award is merit aid from her University and she was awarded it in the Fall of 2013 shortly after her acceptance. Hers is a rolling admission school. Her smaller awards came in April and May.
